Ten minutes into a Milan derby and Inter were already two goals down. Whatever their preparations, chasing the game that early could hardly have been part of the plan.
AC Milan’s 3–1 victory at San Siro began with Christian Pulisic scoring in the fourth minute and Adrien Rabiot adding another six minutes later. Alessandro Bastoni brought Inter back into contention after 22 minutes, before Diego Moreira restored Milan’s two-goal advantage in the 43rd. All four goals arrived before the break.
For me, that sequence tells the story of the result. Milan gave themselves room to breathe, Inter found a way back, and then Milan landed the goal that made the recovery much harder.
Going into half-time at 2–1 would have left this derby finely balanced. At 3–1, Inter faced a very different second half.
Moreira makes the difference
Moreira deserves particular attention. He supplied the assists for Milan’s opening two goals and then scored the third himself. That is a substantial contribution in any fixture. In a derby, it gives supporters a performance they will remember long after the next round of league matches.
My pick for the standout player is straightforward. When one player has a direct involvement in every goal his team scores, he has done more than enough to lead the conversation.
Pulisic and Rabiot also deserve credit for turning that early opportunity into a commanding position. A fast start only matters if it produces something. Milan had two goals on the board before Inter could settle into the contest.
Inter left themselves too much to repair
Bastoni’s goal gave Inter an opening. It also makes conceding again before half-time especially frustrating from their perspective. Having reduced the deficit, they needed to protect that progress.
That is where my criticism lies. Falling behind can happen. Allowing the gap to widen again after working your way back into the match is harder to accept.
The final score remained 3–1, leaving Milan with the victory and Inter with an uncomfortable opening spell to examine.
The verdict
Milan can take real satisfaction from this result. They made their early chances count and supplied another goal when Inter were threatening to turn the derby into a closer contest.
For Inter, the useful response starts with honest analysis of how they ended up chasing two goals so quickly.
Derbies bring enough pressure without handing your neighbours that kind of advantage. Milan made sure the price was three points.
