Well, the bragging rights belong to the black-and-white half of Soweto tonight.

Orlando Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs 2–1 at FNB Stadium, with goals from Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi settling the derby. Pule Mmodi brought Amakhosi level, but Chiefs couldn’t turn that response into a result.

For Pirates supporters, this is a result to enjoy. For Chiefs fans, the frustration will be knowing their team got back into the game and still walked away empty-handed.

That is the derby for you. One set of supporters is already planning Monday’s conversations. The other is hoping nobody brings up football.

Six minutes that brought the derby to life

Mbuthuma put Pirates ahead in the 24th minute, finishing a counterattack after being supplied by Thapelo Mokobodi. Chiefs answered six minutes later through Mmodi, and the teams reached half-time at 1–1.

Credit to Chiefs for that response. Conceding first in this fixture brings its own pressure, and a quick equaliser stops the game from becoming an uphill struggle too early.

At that point, both sets of supporters had reason to believe. Pirates had shown they could hurt Chiefs, while Amakhosi had proved they could respond.

The question was who would make the next opportunity count.

Moremi delivers the decisive moment

The answer came in the 55th minute.

Pirates broke forward after Chiefs lost possession, and Moremi finished the move to restore their lead. Mokobodi supplied the assist again—a valuable contribution to both Pirates goals.

For me, that goal captures the danger of committing players forward without protecting yourself against the turnover. One moment you are looking for an opening; seconds later, you are chasing back towards your own goal.

Pirates deserve credit for taking advantage. Winning possession is only the start. You still need the movement, the pass and the finish to make it worthwhile.

Moremi supplied the finish that separated the teams.

Chiefs will regret having to chase it twice

Getting level should give you something to build on. Having to do it all over again puts everyone under pressure.

That will sting for Amakhosi. Mmodi’s goal had given them a way back, but the second Pirates goal left them chasing once more. This time, there was no equaliser.

My concern for Chiefs would be the cost of those moments when possession changes hands. You can compete for long stretches and still lose a match because the opposition uses a few seconds better than you do.

In a derby, those seconds get discussed for weeks.

A valuable afternoon for the Buccaneers

The victory took Pirates to 25 points from nine league games and temporarily put them top of the Betway Premiership. Chiefs remained on 14 points, leaving an eleven-point gap between the rivals immediately after the match.

That gives the celebration extra weight for Pirates. Beating Chiefs is satisfying enough, but collecting three points while strengthening your league position makes the afternoon even sweeter.

For Amakhosi, the next response matters. Supporters will want the disappointment turned into better decisions and results.

My take? Pirates made the decisive attacking moments count. Chiefs showed a response, but couldn’t make it last.

Buccaneers, enjoy your evening. You’ve earned a little noise.

Amakhosi, it could be a long week in the group chat.
