Alcaraz vs Basilashvili — match review
Carlos Alcaraz beat Nikoloz Basilashvili 6–1, 7–6, winning the second-set tie-break 13–11. He saved four set points before finishing the match on his fourth match point.
Alcaraz’s early control made this look like a comfortable afternoon. From 1–1, he won seven consecutive games, taking the opening set and building an advantage in the second. Basilashvili then recovered the break and turned the contest into a much tighter battle. Tennis
My assessment: Alcaraz’s most valuable achievement was holding his nerve after losing that control. The opening set demonstrated his attacking quality; the tie-break tested his ability to keep competing when the match could easily change direction. Basilashvili deserves credit for making the favourite earn the finish.
Vienna ATP tournament — review so far
Vienna’s indoor ATP 500 has delivered both close matches and a major ranking story. Alexander Zverev defeated Tallon Griekspoor 6–4, 7–5, securing his first rise to world No. 1 when the rankings update on 2 November. That gives this edition significance beyond the trophy itself.
Daniil Medvedev supplied another dramatic escape, saving a match point against Cameron Norrie before winning 4–6, 6–3, 7–6. Tommy Paul took a much quicker route, beating Luciano Darderi 6–1, 6–1 to set up a quarter-final against Alcaraz.
My verdict so far: the tournament’s appeal is the different ways its contenders are progressing. Zverev has combined results with a career milestone, Alcaraz has survived a serious pressure test, and Medvedev has fought through danger. Paul’s emphatic win adds another compelling challenger. With the top three seeds still involved at the quarter-final stage, Vienna has built a strong platform for its closing weekend.
