Wednesday’s Champions League action gave us plenty to talk about. Liverpool lost in Istanbul, Real Madrid found another late winner, and Como produced the scoreline that demanded a second look.

Nine games, 40 goals and very little breathing space. Here’s the review.

Liverpool leave the door open

Fenerbahçe’s 3–2 victory will hurt Liverpool because they led twice. Trey Nyoni and Alexander Isak put the visitors ahead, but the hosts responded before Vedat Muriqi scored the winner.

Scoring twice away from home should give you a platform. Liverpool still came away empty-handed. My concern would be their inability to protect an advantage; getting in front means little when the opposition keeps finding a way back.

For Fenerbahçe, this was a result to savour.

Madrid find their escape route

Real Madrid also faced a difficult evening, but their trip to Athens ended with a 3–2 win over AEK. Federico Valverde supplied the decisive goal in stoppage time.

AEK will look at that result and feel an opportunity slipped away. Madrid will look at the points. There is something exhausting about facing a team that remains a threat right until the final whistle.

Como steal the headlines

Lens 1, Como 9. Yes, nine.

Elsewhere, Manchester City edged Leipzig 3–2, Arsenal won 2–1 at Slavia Praha, and Porto beat Napoli 4–1.

Como get my result of the night. An eight-goal winning margin away from home deserves more than a passing mention. For Lens, a defeat of that size demands a serious response.

City and Arsenal can be pleased with their away victories. These are the points that matter when the table starts tightening up. Napoli, meanwhile, have an uncomfortable scoreline to reflect on.

Dortmund, Brugge and Viking get the job done

Borussia Dortmund beat Real Betis 2–1, Club Brugge secured a 2–1 victory at PSV Eindhoven, and Viking defeated Sabah 4–1.

Brugge’s away win deserves credit on an evening crowded with bigger headlines. Dortmund and Viking also finished the night with valuable victories.

My biggest talking point remains Liverpool letting two leads slip. My standout result belongs to Como. And Madrid? They gave another opponent a painful reminder that the match lasts until the whistle.
