Forty goals, nine matches and precious little breathing space. Tuesday’s Champions League action delivered a feast for attacking football, with Paris Saint-Germain beating Barcelona, Liverpool edging a seven-goal contest and Manchester City putting five past AEK Athens. Matchday three still has Wednesday’s fixtures to come, but its opening night has set a demanding standard for entertainment.
PSG land the heavyweight blow
Paris Saint-Germain’s 4–2 victory over Barcelona was the standout result. Against opponents with enough attacking quality to punish almost anyone, PSG emerged with three points and another significant win following their victory over Manchester City on matchday two.
For Barcelona, the scoreline makes uncomfortable reading. Scoring twice away from home should provide a platform for a result. Conceding four turns that attacking effort into a footnote. The challenge now is to find a better balance before another demanding European assignment arrives.Top Game, Top Players and Top Goals

Liverpool win the thriller
Liverpool beat Villarreal 4–3 in a match that supplied seven goals and a narrow margin between celebration and frustration. The result gives Liverpool three wins from their opening three league-phase games.
There is plenty to admire about a side that keeps collecting victories. There is also an obvious question hanging over a team conceding three at home. Liverpool’s attacking output is delivering points; tightening the defence would make those points considerably less stressful to secure.Good fightback by Liverpool and Happy for Wirtz

City deliver an emphatic response
Manchester City answered their previous European defeat with a commanding 5–1 win over AEK Athens. Phil Foden supplied a hat-trick, giving City both a convincing result and a major individual performance to celebrate.
One victory cannot settle every question, but a four-goal winning margin gives City something solid to build on.

Napoli take seven-goal honours; PSV win away
Napoli matched Liverpool’s scoreline by beating Bodø/Glimt 4–3. Elsewhere, Roma recorded a 4–0 victory over Slovan Bratislava, Borussia Dortmund won 2–1 at Sabah, and PSV Eindhoven left Porto with a 1–0 success. Fenerbahçe drew 2–2 with Slavia Prague, while Stuttgart and Atlético Madrid finished level at 1–1.
PSV’s result deserves attention amid the bigger scorelines. On an evening dominated by goals, an away victory with a clean sheet offered a different route to the same reward.
Tuesday belonged to the attackers. PSG claimed the biggest scalp, City found their scoring touch, and Liverpool and Napoli survived with three points apiece. For the winners, there is momentum to carry forward. For several defences, there is work waiting on the training ground.
