Barcelona had the winning run. Real Madrid left with the win.

Sunday night’s El Clásico at Camp Nou ended 2–1 to Madrid, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice and Raphinha replying for the hosts. Barça’s nine-game winning start in La Liga is over, and their advantage over Madrid is down to three points. That is quite a swing for one evening.

The scoreline will put Mbappé at the centre of every conversation. Fair enough. But Madrid’s ability to stay dangerous, even when Barcelona were building pressure, deserves just as much attention.

Their opener had a generous helping of luck. Gerard Martín’s attempted clearance struck Mbappé and ended up in the net. An ugly goal if you are defending it; a perfectly acceptable one if you are celebrating it. Madrid had already threatened through Arda Güler, though, so Barcelona could hardly claim the warning signs were missing.

Barcelona’s response after the break gave this match its edge. They pushed Madrid back, and Raphinha equalised after Pedri found him following a quickly taken corner. Gerard Martín then had a header saved by Andriy Lunin as the home side pressed for more. For a spell, a Barcelona winner looked a realistic outcome.

That is what will frustrate Barça supporters most. Their team had worked its way back into the contest. Having recovered from a poor position, they still finished empty-handed.

The decisive move showed exactly why Madrid remained a threat. Bellingham helped launch the break, Güler moved the attack on, and Camavinga supplied Mbappé with the chance to finish. There was speed in the move, but also composure. Everyone involved made the next action count.

My take? Camavinga deserves a serious share of the credit. The scorer gets the photograph, but the player delivering that final ball has to judge the moment properly. He did.

For Barcelona, there is no need to turn one league defeat into a crisis. Their second-half response showed why they have started the season so well. But this was an expensive reminder that pressure only takes you so far. When you have Madrid pushed back, you need to make that spell hurt them.

For Madrid, the encouragement goes beyond beating their biggest rivals. They conceded an equaliser away from home, faced a difficult stretch and still found a way to win.

Mbappé will take the headlines. Barcelona will be left thinking about the opportunity they let slip.

And the next Clásico suddenly feels a very long way away.
