Shanghai Masters Quarter-Final Review | 15 October 2026

What a fascinating day of tennis in Shanghai!

The business end of the Rolex Shanghai Masters is upon us, and the pressure is certainly rising.

We have witnessed some massive surprises throughout this tournament, with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic already eliminated. Now the remaining contenders are fighting for a place in the semi-finals of one of the biggest tournaments on the ATP calendar.

Thursday’s quarter-final action saw Alexander Zverev produce another impressive performance, while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina progressed in unfortunate circumstances after Arthur Gea was forced to retire.

Let’s get into the action!

Alexander Zverev Too Strong for Alex de Minaur!

Alexander Zverev def. Alex de Minaur 6–4, 6–4

Another victory for the German!

Alexander Zverev continued his impressive Shanghai Masters campaign with a straight-sets victory over Australia’s Alex de Minaur.

And this was a very important result.

De Minaur is one of the quickest players on the ATP Tour. His movement, defensive ability and fighting spirit make him a difficult opponent for anyone.

But Zverev had the answers.

The German controlled the important moments, using his powerful serve and solid baseline game to keep the Australian under pressure.

Both sets were competitive, but Zverev managed to find the crucial breaks when he needed them.

That is what separates the very best players.

It is not always about spectacular winners or producing magical shots.

Sometimes it is simply about staying composed, serving well and taking your opportunities.

My Thoughts

Zverev is looking increasingly dangerous.

With Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic already out of the tournament, the German has a tremendous opportunity to add another Masters 1000 title to his collection.

He has already secured the year-end World No. 1 ranking, which makes his achievements this season even more impressive.

The big question now is whether he can finish the job in Shanghai.

For me, Zverev is certainly the man to beat!

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Advances After Arthur Gea Retirement

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina def. Arthur Gea 4–1 (retired)

Not the way anyone wants to win a quarter-final.

Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina progressed to the semi-finals after Frenchman Arthur Gea was forced to retire while trailing 4–1 in the opening set.

A disappointing ending to what promised to be an interesting contest.

Gea had enjoyed a wonderful tournament, producing some excellent tennis and proving that he could compete against established names.

His victories over Ben Shelton and Jakub Menšík were among the highlights of his Shanghai campaign.

Unfortunately, his quarter-final ended prematurely.

For Davidovich Fokina, however, the journey continues.

The Spaniard deserves plenty of credit for reaching this stage of the tournament.

He has battled through difficult matches, demonstrated tremendous determination and now finds himself just one victory away from the final.

My Thoughts

It is always disappointing when a match ends through retirement.

Tennis supporters want to see both players competing until the final point.

But injuries are part of professional sport.

Hopefully, Gea recovers quickly and returns stronger.

As for Davidovich Fokina, he now faces a massive challenge against Alexander Zverev.

Can the Spaniard produce another surprise?

We shall see!

Zverev vs Davidovich Fokina – A Fascinating Semi-Final Awaits!

Now this should be interesting!

Alexander Zverev against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for a place in the Shanghai Masters final.

On paper, Zverev enters as the favourite.

He has the bigger serve, considerable experience at this level and the confidence that comes with a successful season.

But Davidovich Fokina is a dangerous opponent.

The Spaniard possesses excellent court coverage, aggressive shot-making and the ability to disrupt an opponent’s rhythm.

He will need to be at his absolute best.

For me, the key will be Zverev’s serve.

If the German consistently lands his first serve and controls the rallies, he should have the advantage.

However, if Davidovich Fokina can extend the exchanges and force Zverev into uncomfortable positions, this could become a very interesting battle.

My Prediction: Zverev to reach the final.

But don’t underestimate the Spaniard!

The Other Quarter-Finals – More Drama Still to Come!

Two exciting matches remain on Friday, 16 October.

Daniil Medvedev vs Tommy Paul

This could be an absolute cracker!

Medvedev has looked increasingly comfortable in Shanghai, and his victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round was impressive.

The Russian defeated Tsitsipas 6–4, 7–5 to continue his pursuit of another Shanghai title.

Tommy Paul, meanwhile, has enjoyed an excellent tournament.

The American defeated Zizou Bergs 7–6, 6–4 to book his place in the last eight.

Paul has the athleticism, movement and attacking ability to trouble Medvedev.

But the Russian’s defensive skills and ability to absorb pressure make him extremely difficult to beat.

My Prediction: Medvedev in three sets.

I expect a close encounter!

Rafael Jódar vs Casper Ruud

What a tournament for young Rafael Jódar!

The 20-year-old Spaniard has shown tremendous fighting spirit, repeatedly recovering from difficult situations to keep his Shanghai campaign alive.

His fourth-round comeback victory over Botic van de Zandschulp was another excellent example of his determination.

Now he faces Norway’s Casper Ruud.

Ruud has the experience, consistency and heavy topspin groundstrokes to make life difficult for the youngster.

But Jódar has already demonstrated that he is not intimidated by the occasion.

This could be another fascinating contest between youth and experience.

My Prediction: Ruud to edge a tight match.

Although Jódar could certainly spring another surprise!

My Thoughts – Who Can Win the Shanghai Masters?

With the tournament approaching its conclusion, the battle for the title is becoming very interesting.

Alexander Zverev remains my favourite.

The German has the experience, confidence and all-round game to go all the way.

Daniil Medvedev is another serious contender.

When Medvedev is playing well, his consistency from the baseline and ability to frustrate opponents make him extremely dangerous.

Casper Ruud cannot be overlooked either.

And then we have the potential surprise packages in Davidovich Fokina and Rafael Jódar.

That is the beauty of tennis.

Rankings and reputations matter, but once the players step onto the court, anything can happen.

Final Thoughts – Shanghai Is Heating Up!

What an interesting quarter-final day at the Shanghai Masters!

Zverev continues his march towards another major title, while Davidovich Fokina finds himself in the semi-finals following the unfortunate retirement of Arthur Gea.

There is still plenty of exciting tennis ahead.

Can Zverev justify his favourite status?

Will Medvedev continue his impressive run?

Could Rafael Jódar produce another stunning performance?

Or will we witness another unexpected result?

One thing is certain.

The Shanghai Masters is far from over!

And that is why we love this beautiful sport.

The pressure, the drama, the brilliant rallies and those unforgettable moments.

Bring on the semi-finals!
