Ingredients

For the beef

  • 500 g Halaal beef strips, thinly sliced

  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil

  • 1 teaspoon ginger and garlic paste

  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder

  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • Salt to taste

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

For the chilli fry

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 green pepper, sliced

  • 1 red pepper, sliced

  • 2–3 fresh green chillies, slit lengthwise

  • 1 teaspoon crushed garlic

  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

  • 1 tablespoon Halaal-certified soy sauce

  • 1 teaspoon crushed chilli flakes (optional)

  • A handful of fresh coriander, chopped

  • Fresh curry leaves (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon butter or extra cooking oil

Method

Step 1: Marinate the beef

Place the beef strips in a bowl. Add ginger and garlic paste, chilli powder, turmeric, cumin, coriander, black pepper, paprika, salt and lemon juice. Mix well and leave to marinate for at least 20 minutes.

Step 2: Cook the beef

Heat the oil in a heavy-based pan. Add the marinated beef and fry over medium-high heat until lightly browned. Reduce the heat, cover and cook until tender, adding small splashes of water if necessary. Cooking time will depend on the cut of beef.

Step 3: Fry the vegetables

In a separate pan, heat the butter or oil. Add the sliced onions, garlic, green chillies and curry leaves. Fry until fragrant. Add the red and green peppers and stir-fry for 3–4 minutes, keeping them slightly crisp.

Step 4: Bring everything together

Add the cooked beef to the vegetables. Stir in the tomato paste, Halaal soy sauce and chilli flakes. Toss everything together over medium-high heat for 3–5 minutes until the beef is coated in a rich, spicy masala.

Step 5: Garnish and serve

Sprinkle with freshly chopped coriander and a squeeze of lemon juice. Serve immediately while hot.

Tips for the Perfect Beef Chilli Fry

  • Choose tender beef: Rump, sirloin or tenderised beef strips work beautifully.

  • Adjust the heat: Add extra green chillies for a fiery kick, or reduce the chilli powder for a milder family-friendly version.

  • Avoid overcooking the peppers: They should retain a little crunch for the best texture.

  • For a saucier chilli fry: Add 2–3 tablespoons of water or beef stock when combining the ingredients.

  • Keep it Halaal: Use Halaal-certified beef, sauces and seasonings.

What to Serve with Beef Chilli Fry

This delicious dish pairs beautifully with warm homemade rotis, buttery naan, fragrant basmati rice or even freshly baked bread rolls. For a lighter meal, serve it alongside a fresh cucumber and tomato salad.
