UEFA Nations League Post-Match Review: Spain Turn Up the Heat as England Get Back on Track
Tuesday, 29 September 2026
Another night of UEFA Nations League football is in the books, and Matchday 2 gave us plenty to talk about.
Spain continued their flying start with a dominant performance against Croatia, England bounced back from their opening defeat, while Switzerland quietly produced another impressive result of their own.
Here’s how Tuesday night unfolded.
Spain 4–1 Croatia
Spain are wasting absolutely no time in taking control of Group A3.
After their dramatic win over England in the opening round, Spain returned home and produced an even more convincing performance, beating Croatia 4–1.
Lamine Yamal was once again right at the centre of the action.
The young winger struck twice as Spain’s attack caused Croatia problems throughout the night. Croatia managed to get themselves on the scoresheet through Dion Beljo, but it did little to change the direction of the match.
Marc Pubill and Nico Williams also found the net as Spain made it two wins from two.
Six points. Seven goals scored. Wins over England and Croatia.
That’s about as strong a start as Spain could have asked for.

Czechia 0–2 England
England needed a response after losing 3–2 to Spain at Wembley, and they got one.Their trip to Prague became slightly easier when Czechia were reduced to ten men following Pavel Šulc’s first-half red card.
England still had to remain patient. The breakthrough eventually arrived after the interval, with Anthony Gordon heading home from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s delivery.
Harry Kane then added the second to put the result beyond Czechia. It wasn’t necessarily a night that required England to produce their most spectacular football, but after the disappointment of the Spain defeat, getting three points on the board was the important part.

Group A3 is already becoming interesting.
Spain lead the way with six points, while England and Croatia both sit on three. Czechia are still searching for their first point.
And England’s next assignment? Croatia away.
That one should tell us a little more about where this group is heading.
Scotland 0–3 Switzerland
Switzerland might not be grabbing the biggest headlines, but their start deserves attention.A 3–0 victory away to Scotland means they have now won their opening two Nations League matches by the same scoreline.Scotland’s task became much more difficult following Jack Hendry’s early dismissal, and Switzerland took full advantage.
Ricardo Rodríguez, Nico Elvedi and Zeki Amdouni supplied the goals. The numbers after two matches make very good reading for the Swiss:
Six points. Six goals. Zero conceded. That’s an excellent foundation for the rest of the campaign.
Elsewhere in the group, Slovenia collected their first victory with a 2–0 win over North Macedonia.
Albania and Slovakia Keep Their Perfect Starts. There were also strong nights for Albania and Slovakia further down the Nations League pyramid.
Albania followed their opening victory over Belarus with a comfortable 3–0 win against San Marino.
That puts them on six points from their opening two matches and gives them early control of their group.
Slovakia have also started with maximum points.
Their 2–1 victory over Kazakhstan made it back-to-back wins after they opened the campaign by beating Moldova.
Iceland were another side with reason to celebrate after travelling to Luxembourg and returning home with a convincing 3–0 victory.
Tuesday’s Results
Finland 0–0 Belarus
Moldova 1–1 Faroe Islands
Czechia 0–2 England
Spain 4–1 Croatia
Scotland 0–3 Switzerland
Slovenia 2–0 North Macedonia
San Marino 0–3 Albania
Slovakia 2–1 Kazakhstan
Bulgaria 0–0 Estonia
Luxembourg 0–3 Iceland
The Big Talking Point
It’s difficult to look beyond Spain.
Beating England at Wembley was already an impressive way to begin the campaign. Following that up by putting four past Croatia sends an even stronger message.
And Lamine Yamal continues to make himself impossible to ignore.
Spain have plenty of football still to play, so nothing has been decided after two rounds. But six points from matches against England and Croatia puts them exactly where they wanted to be.
England, meanwhile, have recovered quickly.
The defeat against Spain immediately placed some pressure on their trip to Prague, but three points and a clean sheet gives them something to build on before the much tougher trip to Croatia.
Switzerland might just be Tuesday night’s other big story.
Two matches, two 3–0 victories and not a single goal conceded.
That’s the sort of start that can completely change the complexion of a Nations League group.
Matchday 2 is done.
Now things are starting to get interesting.
Simply Sublime
