Eritrea vs South Africa prediction and preview for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers
Eritrea vs South Africa preview and prediction ahead of their AFCON 2027 qualifier.

South Africa will look to make it two wins from two in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers when they face Eritrea at Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo on Wednesday evening.

Bafana Bafana could hardly have asked for a better start to the new Pitso Mosimane era. Their 2-1 victory over Guinea handed them three valuable points and immediately put them in control of their own destiny in Group D.

However, anyone expecting Eritrea to simply roll over might be in for a surprise.

The Red Sea Camels produced one of the more eye-catching performances of the opening round when they held Kenya to a 1-1 draw in Nairobi. Eritrea actually took the lead through Nahom Girmai Netabay and came within minutes of collecting all three points before Ryan Ogam rescued Kenya with a late equaliser.

That result should be enough to get South Africa’s attention.

The Game will be played at Al-Salam Stadium, Cairo, Egypt (Neutral)

Bafana Bafana Have the Early Advantage

South Africa opened their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Guinea at Orlando Stadium.

Interestingly, it was Bafana’s defenders who delivered the goals. Ime Okon opened the scoring before Guinea hit back in the second half, but substitute Samukele Kabini struck in the 77th minute to secure all three points.

It wasn’t a perfect performance from South Africa, but qualifying campaigns aren’t always about playing beautiful football. Sometimes you simply need to find a way to win.

Bafana did exactly that.

Mosimane will now want to see more from his attacking players. South Africa have plenty of options going forward, with the likes of Relebohile Mofokeng, Oswin Appollis, Iqraam Rayners and Thapelo Maseko capable of causing problems.

Against Eritrea, Bafana should expect to have opportunities. The question is whether they can be clinical enough to take them.

Eritrea Cannot Be Underestimated

Eritrea’s FIFA ranking may suggest that this should be a comfortable evening for South Africa, but their opening qualifier told a different story.

They frustrated Kenya, defended with determination and showed that they can punish mistakes.

That makes patience important for Bafana.

If Eritrea sit deep and allow South Africa to dominate possession, Mosimane’s side cannot afford to become frustrated and start forcing the game. Moving the ball quickly and creating overloads in wide areas could be the key to opening the Eritrean defence.

South Africa also need to be alert when possession changes hands.

Eritrea have already shown that they don’t necessarily need many chances to make an impact.

Why This Match Matters

There is an unusual situation in Group D.

Kenya are co-hosts of AFCON 2027 and therefore already have their place at the tournament. That means only the highest-placed team among South Africa, Guinea and Eritrea will qualify alongside them from this group.

Every point matters.

South Africa’s victory over Guinea was therefore particularly valuable, and beating Eritrea would strengthen Bafana’s position before the qualifying campaign resumes in November.

Dropping points, meanwhile, would give Eritrea encouragement and potentially reopen the battle.

This is exactly the type of fixture South Africa need to win if they want to qualify without creating unnecessary pressure later in the campaign.

Players to Watch

Relebohile Mofokeng – South Africa

Mofokeng has the creativity and close control to unlock a compact defence. Eritrea could make space difficult to find, meaning South Africa may need someone capable of producing something unpredictable around the penalty area.

Teboho Mokoena – South Africa

Mokoena’s influence in midfield could be crucial. Bafana should see plenty of the ball, and his passing range can help South Africa switch play quickly instead of allowing Eritrea to settle into their defensive shape.

Nahom Girmai Netabay – Eritrea

After scoring against Kenya, Girmai has already demonstrated why South Africa cannot switch off defensively. Eritrea may spend periods without possession, but their threat on transitions shouldn’t be ignored.

Eritrea vs South Africa Prediction

Eritrea deserve respect after their performance against Kenya, and this might be more complicated than the rankings suggest.

But South Africa should still have the stronger squad, greater depth and more individual quality.

Expect Eritrea to make Bafana work for it, particularly during the opening stages. If Mosimane’s side remain patient and avoid giving their opponents cheap opportunities on the counterattack, their quality should eventually tell.

Sublime Prediction: Eritrea 0-2 South Africa

Bafana Bafana may have to break down a stubborn opponent, but South Africa have enough attacking options to take control and leave Cairo with another important three points.
