There are few things more satisfying than a really good burger.

A juicy patty. Properly melted cheese. A soft bun that doesn’t fall apart halfway through. Crispy chips on the side.

And preferably enough sauce to make eating it elegantly completely impossible.

Fortunately, Johannesburg has no shortage of excellent Halaal burgers.

From proper smash burgers and smoked brisket to old-school cheeseburgers and enormous creations that require a strategy before you attempt the first bite, Joburg’s Halaal burger scene has become seriously impressive.

So, when the craving hits, these are some of the best Halaal burgers in Johannesburg to put on your foodie list.

Mafia Bite – Constantia Kloof

If subtle isn’t what you’re looking for, Mafia Bite should be high on the list.

This fully Halaal West Rand favourite has developed something of a cult following for its smash burgers, smoked meats and gloriously over-the-top comfort food.

Even the burger names have attitude.

You’ll find the likes of El Chapo, Blanco and Escobar on the menu, alongside their smoked creations.

But one of the burgers that really gets people talking is the Frank Lucas.

Instead of stopping at a standard beef patty, this one brings slow-smoked brisket into the equation.

It’s rich, smoky and messy.

Exactly as a burger like this should be.

Come hungry.

Very hungry.

Simply Sublime tip: Add one of their extravagant milkshakes if you’ve decided calories aren’t invited to the conversation today.

Kitchen of Oz – Emmarentia

Kitchen of Oz isn’t interested in making boring burgers.

Thank goodness for that.

This little Emmarentia spot has earned a loyal following for big flavours, generous portions and burgers with a distinctly Joburg personality.

The famous Jou’Burger is the one you’ll hear about most often.

It’s certainly not your standard cheeseburger.

Think smash beef, masala steak, mutton polony, plenty of cheese and sauce all packed together into one gloriously excessive meal.

There are more traditional smash and chicken burgers available too, but if you’re coming here for the first time, it seems almost wrong not to investigate what all the Jou’Burger fuss is about.

And order the masala chips.

You can thank me later.

Burger Bros – Norwood

Sometimes all you really want is a good burger without an entire tower of ingredients balancing precariously on top of it.

Burger Bros in Norwood is one to know.

The Halaal-certified burger spot has become a neighbourhood favourite, and its burgers regularly come up when Joburgers start discussing where to get their next fix.

Their Jalapeño Burger is particularly popular if you like a little heat.

This is the sort of place that works when you want something casual, uncomplicated and satisfying.

No ceremony required.

Just bring an appetite.

RocoMamas – Melrose Arch

RocoMamas helped turn smash burgers into a South African obsession long before half of Instagram was talking about crispy-edged patties.

And the Melrose Arch branch is a particularly useful one to know because it is Halaal.

The appeal here is choice.

You can order one of the established burger combinations or start building your own creation with smash patties, cheese, sauces and toppings.

Things can get out of hand surprisingly quickly.

Then there are the loaded fries, wings, waffles and those enormous freakshakes sitting temptingly on the menu.

Restraint is possible.

I’ve heard.

This is a great option for groups and families, particularly when everyone has a slightly different definition of the perfect burger.

Burgerack – Rosebank

Rosebank is one of the easiest areas in Joburg for finding Halaal food, and Burgerack at The Zone is one of the options when a burger craving arrives.

The burgers take their inspiration from classic American grill food, so expect beef, cheese, sauces and plenty of indulgence.

There are also ribs, waffles and other comfort-food options if somebody in the group mysteriously doesn’t feel like a burger.

It’s convenient, casual and particularly useful if you’re already spending the day shopping or exploring Rosebank.

The difficult part is walking past all the other food on the way there without changing your mind three times.

Texakhana Spur – Rosebank

Sometimes you aren’t looking for the newest smash-burger opening.

You just want a Spur burger.

Texakhana Spur at The Zone in Rosebank gives Halaal diners the familiar Spur experience, complete with burgers, steaks and ribs.

It’s also an easy choice for families.

Everyone knows the menu, there are plenty of options and nobody needs a twenty-minute discussion about where to eat.

Parents will understand just how valuable that last point can be.

RocoMamas – Nelson Mandela Square

If Sandton is more convenient, there’s another Halaal RocoMamas option at Nelson Mandela Square.

Again, smash burgers are the attraction.

Start with beef and cheese and keep things simple, or continue adding toppings until you’ve created something that requires both hands, several serviettes and possibly engineering approval.

The Nelson Mandela Square location also makes this a useful stop if you’re sightseeing around Sandton or spending the day shopping.

Burger first.

Shopping afterwards.

Trying on clothes immediately after a giant burger is a decision I cannot recommend.

Burgerack – Nelson Mandela Square

Burgerack also has a presence at Nelson Mandela Square, giving you another Halaal burger option right in the middle of Sandton.

This is one for classic American-style burger cravings.

Beef, chicken, cheese, fries and sauces – all the important food groups are represented.

It’s particularly convenient if you’re meeting friends in Sandton and want something casual rather than turning lunch into an occasion.

Although, to be fair, a good burger is always a bit of an occasion.

Don’t Forget Lenasia

You can’t write about Halaal food in Johannesburg and ignore Lenasia.

The problem isn’t finding Halaal food here.

It’s deciding what to eat.

You’ll find everything from long-standing takeaway favourites to newer restaurants serving smash burgers, steakhouse-style burgers and the sort of enormous loaded creations that make you reconsider ordering a starter.

Burgerack has a Lenasia location, while RocoMamas is another familiar option in the area.

But don’t limit yourself to the chains.

Part of the fun of eating your way around Lenasia is discovering smaller independents and neighbourhood favourites.

Ask a local where they get their favourite burger and prepare for a very strong opinion.

Possibly several.

Smash Burger or Classic Burger?

Johannesburg has definitely embraced the smash burger.

And I understand why.

Pressing the beef onto a scorching-hot grill creates those crispy, caramelised edges that work ridiculously well with melted cheese, pickles and burger sauce.

A classic thicker patty gives you something different – juicier in the middle, meatier and usually better suited to a towering pile of toppings.

Which one is better?

That depends entirely on the day.

Personally, I think this requires extensive research.

What Makes a Great Halaal Burger?

Halaal or otherwise, the same burger rules apply.

The patty needs flavour.

The cheese needs to actually melt.

The bun should be soft but strong enough to survive until the final bite.

And sauce is there to improve the burger, not make identifying the other ingredients impossible.

Then there are the chips.

Bad chips can ruin an otherwise excellent burger meal.

They need to arrive hot, crisp and properly seasoned.

Bonus points for masala chips.

Actually, several bonus points.

Halaal-Certified vs Halaal-Friendly

This is worth checking before you eat somewhere new.

A restaurant described as Halaal-friendly isn’t necessarily the same thing as a restaurant that is fully Halaal or certified by a recognised Halaal authority.

Individual requirements also differ.

If certification is important to you, check the restaurant’s current certification rather than relying on an old social-media post or restaurant list.

Certification and ownership can change, as can individual branches of restaurant chains.

When in doubt, ask.

Where to Find Halaal Burgers in Johannesburg

One of the best things about Joburg’s Halaal food scene is that you no longer need to drive to one particular part of the city to find something good.

Norwood and Emmarentia have excellent independent options.

Rosebank has an impressive concentration of Halaal restaurants.

Sandton has become increasingly Halaal-friendly.

The West Rand has Mafia Bite.

And then there are Fordsburg, Mayfair and Lenasia, where finding Halaal food has never exactly been difficult.

Which means wherever you happen to be in Joburg, a good burger probably isn’t very far away.

Final Bite

Trying to choose the best Halaal burger in Johannesburg could become a full-time occupation.

Mafia Bite is there when you want smoked meat and serious indulgence.

Kitchen of Oz brings the spice and a distinctly Joburg twist.

Burger Bros keeps things satisfyingly burger-focused.

And RocoMamas and Burgerack make it easy to find a Halaal burger when you’re out in Rosebank, Sandton or other parts of the city.

But this is Johannesburg.

There will always be another little takeaway, neighbourhood restaurant or new smash-burger spot waiting to challenge your current favourite.

Which means this list is never really finished.

And I’m perfectly happy with that.

Have I missed your favourite Halaal burger in Joburg? Tell me where I need to eat next. I’m always prepared to conduct further research.
