There are games you win. And then there are games that make you remember why you watch football in the first place.
Inter–Napoli was one of those. For 45 minutes, San Siro waited. The football was intense, the chances were there, Dimarco even rattled the crossbar from a free-kick, but somehow it stayed 0–0.
Then the second half went completely mad. Napoli came flying out. Politano made it 1–0 on 50 minutes. Three minutes later Højlund smashed home the second from outside the box. 0–2. At San Siro.
For most teams, that is where the night starts slipping away. Not this Inter.
Lautaro Martínez needed only three minutes to answer. Dimarco supplied the ball and the captain attacked it, sliding in to drag Inter straight back into the match.
And from that moment you could feel it. Napoli were still dangerous. Inter were taking risks. The game became stretched, frantic and wonderfully uncomfortable.
Exactly the sort of match where tactics eventually give way to personality. Then came Marcus Thuram.
After threatening more than once, Thuram rose above the Napoli defence in the 82nd minute and powered home the equaliser.
2–2. San Siro believed.
Napoli still had opportunities to steal it. Neres went close. Anguissa almost found the decisive touch. But Inter had already smelled blood.
And in stoppage time, inevitably, it was the captain again.
A corner. Chaos in the penalty area. The ball dropping at the back post.
Lautaro. 3–2.
