Three points each for Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, but three very different afternoons. City survived a determined Ipswich challenge, Liverpool recovered from a goal down at Brentford, and Chelsea left Everton with a clean sheet and Pedro Neto doing the damage.

Across Europe, Barcelona scored five at Real Betis, while Bayern Munich put six past Leipzig. There was plenty for supporters to enjoy—and plenty for a few managers to explain.

Liverpool: Take the points, but keep asking questions

Liverpool won 2–1 at Brentford, with Víctor Muñoz and Alexander Isak overturning Keane Lewis-Potter’s opener. Brentford had Yehor Yarmoliuk sent off before half-time and finished with nine men after Vitaly Janelt’s late dismissal.

For Liverpool supporters, the comeback will be welcome. Going behind away from home tests a team’s patience as much as its ability. Liverpool found the goals they needed and avoided another frustrating league result.

But let us keep the celebrations in proportion. Brentford’s first red card changed the contest, and Liverpool still had work to do against ten men. The result deserves credit without becoming evidence that every problem has disappeared.

Isak’s winner is the encouraging part. A striker can spend long stretches waiting for an opportunity, but the job is to make that opportunity count. Liverpool needed a decisive contribution, and he delivered.

Take the points, enjoy the recovery, and demand more consistency next time.

Manchester City: Haaland makes the difference again

Manchester City beat Ipswich Town 3–2 to make it seven league wins from seven. Phil Foden opened the scoring, Daizen Maeda equalised, and Erling Haaland’s double put City in command before Zian Flemming’s late penalty made the finish uncomfortable.

Seven wins is an excellent return, however you assess the performances along the way. City keep giving their rivals the same difficult task: win your own match, then hope someone else can slow the leaders down.

Ipswich deserve recognition for making a contest of it. The scoreline tells City that their attacking quality remains a huge advantage, but conceding twice at home should still invite scrutiny.

Haaland remains the difference between a difficult afternoon and dropped points. Give him chances and an opponent’s good work can unravel very quickly.

Chelsea: Neto delivers, but concern for Martínez

Pedro Neto scored both goals in Chelsea’s 2–0 victory at Everton. The afternoon also brought concern for goalkeeper Emi Martínez, who went off injured, with Mike Penders coming on in his place.

This is the sort of away result Chelsea need to produce regularly. There is value in leaving a difficult ground with the points secured and the opposition kept out.

Neto supplied the cutting edge. When a match needs someone to turn promising moments into goals, a player willing to take responsibility becomes priceless.

The injury takes some of the pleasure out of the result, though. Chelsea will welcome the win while hoping for encouraging news about Martínez.

Elsewhere in the Premier League

Fulham earned a valuable 1–0 victory over Hull City, their first league win of the season. For a side searching for momentum, one narrow victory can lift an enormous weight.

Aston Villa also won 1–0, away at Newcastle United, with Johan Manzambi scoring the winner. Newcastle were left with another disappointing result to digest.

Saturday’s full Premier League results:

Home Score Away
Everton 0–2 Chelsea
Brentford 1–2 Liverpool
Fulham 1–0 Hull City
Manchester City 3–2 Ipswich Town
Newcastle United 0–1 Aston Villa

Barcelona: Five goals and another warning to the chasing pack

Barcelona won 5–2 at Real Betis, extending their perfect league start to nine victories. Lamine Yamal was among the scorers, while Betis had Facundo Bernal sent off in the second half.

Five goals away from home is a powerful statement. Barcelona’s opponents are facing a side with both attacking confidence and winning momentum.

Conceding twice gives the coaches something to discuss. For supporters, however, another victory and another productive attacking display make enjoyable viewing.

Bayern Munich: Díaz steals the show

Bayern Munich overwhelmed RB Leipzig 6–1. Luis Díaz scored a hat-trick, with Aleksandar Pavlović, Michael Olise and Harry Kane also scoring. Andrija Maksimović supplied Leipzig’s late consolation.

That is a bruising result for Leipzig and a major confidence boost for Bayern. Díaz deserves the headlines, but six goals spread across four scorers also underline the number of threats Bayern can offer.

My pick of the day? Díaz for individual impact. In England, City’s winning run remains the standard everyone else must chase. Liverpool and Chelsea did their part today; the challenge is to keep doing it.
