Beach-day bites, familiar favourites and a little planning before you order.
There is something about a day at the coast that makes lunch feel like an occasion. Perhaps it is the sea air. Perhaps it is the fact that everyone suddenly becomes hungry at exactly the same time.
Strand and Gordon’s Bay lend themselves to that kind of outing: a leisurely drive, a walk near the water and the inevitable discussion about what to eat. For anyone looking for halaal food, though, choosing lunch can take a little more thought.
The useful approach is to know your options before the hunger sets in. This shortlist is based on published menus and listings rather than personal tasting visits, with much of the choice centred on Strand.
Start with The Food Planet
100% Halaal Certified
If you want hearty, local comfort food made fresh daily, The Food Planet is a primary go-to spot in Strand with two local branches (South Side Centre on Bay Road and another on Lower Gordon’s Bay Road).
-
The Vibe: Casual, family-friendly, great for takeaways or casual sit-downs.
-
On the Menu: Wood-fired pizzas, smash burgers, massive Roti Gatsbys, traditional curries (lamb, chicken, mince, or beef goulash wrapped in soft roti or served with rice), and loaded steak or chicken options.
For a group with different cravings, The Food Planet makes a practical starting point. Its website advertises halaal certification and a menu that includes gatsbys, rotis, burgers, curries and wood-fired pizzas. That gives you room to negotiate when one person wants a sandwich and somebody else has already decided on pizza.
The masala steak options and roti gatsbys catch the eye on paper. They suit the sort of casual lunch that asks very little of your afternoon: place an order, gather the family and make time to eat.
There is a place for a beautifully plated restaurant meal. There is also a place for opening a takeaway parcel when you have sand on your shoes and no interest in dressing up.
Flameros for the burger-and-chips crowd
Sometimes the decision is already made before anyone sees a menu. You want a burger, chips and something cold to drink.
Flameros is worth considering for that mood. Mr D lists both its Winston Estate outlet and its Gordon’s Bay Drive Thru listing under halaal, with chicken, burgers and wings among the categories. Treat that as a useful lead and confirm the specific branch’s current halaal status before ordering.
A straightforward takeaway has its own appeal on a family outing. Nobody needs a long discussion about courses. Everyone can choose their meal, and the day can carry on.
Nando’s Strand for a familiar order
There are days when familiarity wins. You know the flavour you want, you know roughly what the family will order, and that is enough.
Nando’s Strand Drive Thru is on the corner of Gordon’s Bay Drive and George Street. Its official branch page lists dine-in, collection and delivery, while Eat Out describes the branch as strictly halaal. Nando’s advises customers to check for the halaal designation when selecting a restaurant online.
That makes it a useful option to check when you want a familiar chicken meal without turning lunch into another activity to organise.
A quick stop along Gordon’s Bay Drive
For coffee or a convenient food stop, Hungry for Halaal lists the Greenways convenience store at Astron Energy, 82 Gordon’s Bay Drive in Strand, as halaal certified, with a vida coffee offering. Confirm the current certificate and available food at the counter when you visit.
1. The Food Planet (Strand) — 100% Halaal Certified

2. Café Excelsior (Gordon’s Bay)
Located in The Village Plaza on Lancaster Road, Café Excelsior brings a warm, refined café atmosphere to Gordon’s Bay.
-
The Vibe: Welcoming, stylish space focusing on elevated comfort food and specialty drinks.
-
On the Menu: Gourmet beef and chicken burgers, all-day breakfasts, exclusive drink-and-food/dessert pairings (“EX Cups”), and expertly brewed hot or iced coffees and teas. (Note: It is always recommended to double-check specific meat and supplier certifications directly with the establishment if strict halaal is required).
3. Exploring Nearby Options (Somerset West)
Because Strand and Gordon’s Bay are right next to Somerset West, many locals pop over slightly inland for dedicated halaal options:
-
Ghenwa’s Culinary Club (Lourensford Wine Estate, Somerset West): Offers a wonderful Middle Eastern, Lebanese, and Mediterranean menu in a stunning estate setting.
-
Kitchen Kafe (Gants Plaza, Strand): Known for South African light meals, grills, and gourmet burgers.
It is the kind of stop that can fit between plans, especially when everyone wants a small break before heading home.
Check the listing before making the trip
Older food guides can be useful, but ownership changes matter. The former Daily Coffee Café in Gordon’s Bay still appears in some halaal searches. Hungry for Halaal’s updated listing says it was sold in August 2025 and would no longer be halaal. It should therefore be left off a current halaal itinerary.
Where certification matters to you, ask to see the current certificate for the exact branch. A seafood menu or a delivery-app category alone may not answer all your questions.
A good coastal lunch does not have to be elaborate. Sometimes all it takes is a meal everyone is comfortable ordering, enough serviettes and a little time left to enjoy the view.
