14 October 2026 | UEFA Champions League 2026/27

If there is one thing the UEFA Champions League continues to remind us, it is that reputations mean very little once the referee blows the whistle.

Wednesday night’s Matchday 2 action had everything football supporters could ask for. Goals flying in from all directions, European giants being humbled, unexpected heroes stepping forward and some serious questions being asked of teams expected to challenge for the trophy.

From Paris Saint-Germain silencing Manchester City to Liverpool’s nine-goal thriller in Austria, this was European football at its unpredictable best.

Let’s get into the action.

PSG STUN MANCHESTER CITY AT THE ETIHAD

Manchester City 2–4 Paris Saint-Germain

This was supposed to be one of the heavyweight battles of the evening. Instead, PSG arrived in Manchester and delivered a statement that will be heard across Europe.

The French champions raced into a three-goal lead, with Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha putting City under enormous pressure.

Erling Haaland responded with two goals after the break, giving the home supporters some hope of an extraordinary comeback. But PSG refused to surrender their advantage, with Maghnes Akliouche helping put the contest beyond City’s reach.

Conceding four goals at home in European competition is not something Manchester City supporters are accustomed to seeing.

My take: PSG didn’t just win a football match. They exposed vulnerabilities in a City side that will need to improve defensively if they intend to challenge Europe’s elite. City’s attacking quality remains dangerous, but you cannot keep giving opponents opportunities and expect Haaland to rescue you every time.

LIVERPOOL SCORE SIX BUT DEFENSIVE QUESTIONS REMAIN

LASK 3–6 Liverpool

Nine goals. Yes, nine!

Liverpool travelled to Austria and produced one of the most entertaining games of Matchday 2.

Bradley Barcola was the star of the evening, scoring a hat-trick as Liverpool’s attacking players ran riot. Ronald Araújo, Jeremie Frimpong and Lewis Koumas also found the net.

The Reds were ruthless going forward, creating chances and repeatedly punishing LASK’s defensive weaknesses.

However, conceding three goals against an opponent they had largely controlled will leave Liverpool with a few things to think about.

My Sublime take: Six goals away from home deserves applause, regardless of the opposition. Barcola’s performance will grab the headlines, and rightly so. But Liverpool cannot ignore the other side of the scoreline. Against stronger opposition, those defensive lapses could become very expensive.

ASTON VILLA SEND OUT A WARNING

Aston Villa 6–0 Fenerbahçe

What a night at Villa Park!

Aston Villa absolutely demolished Fenerbahçe, producing one of the most convincing performances of the evening.

Six goals without reply is a remarkable result at this level, particularly against a club with Fenerbahçe’s European experience.

Villa demonstrated attacking ambition, confidence and a willingness to punish every weakness their opponents showed.

My take: Aston Villa are not in this competition simply to make up the numbers. A result like this will make other teams take notice. The real challenge now is maintaining that standard against stronger opponents.

REAL MADRID SURVIVE A SEVEN-GOAL THRILLER

Roma 3–4 Real Madrid

If you enjoy football matches filled with goals and tension, this was another contest worth watching.

Real Madrid travelled to Rome and came away with a thrilling 4–3 victory.

Scoring four goals away from home in the Champions League is impressive, but conceding three will certainly concern Madrid’s coaching staff.

Nevertheless, this is the sort of result that has become associated with the Spanish giants. Even when a match becomes uncomfortable, they somehow find a way to emerge victorious.

My take: Madrid’s ability to win difficult European matches remains one of their greatest strengths. But their defensive performance raises questions. Their attacking quality may win them matches, but defensive stability will be crucial as the competition progresses.

BODØ/GLIMT SHOCK BORUSSIA DORTMUND

Bodø/Glimt 1–0 Borussia Dortmund

Here is another reminder that football is not played on paper.

Borussia Dortmund arrived as the more established European name, but Bodø/Glimt had other ideas.

The Norwegian side secured a famous 1–0 victory, showing that determination, organisation and belief can still overcome reputation.

My take: This is exactly why the Champions League is special. Smaller clubs are not automatically intimidated by famous opponents anymore. Dortmund will be disappointed, but Bodø/Glimt deserve their moment in the spotlight.

FEYENOORD EDGE COMO IN FIVE-GOAL CONTEST

Feyenoord 3–2 Como

Feyenoord and Como served up another entertaining encounter, with the Dutch side eventually securing a narrow victory.

Five goals reflected a competitive evening in which neither team could afford to relax.

Feyenoord ultimately did enough to collect three valuable points, although Como certainly made them work for the result.

My take: These are the kinds of matches that can become extremely important when the league-phase standings begin to tighten. Feyenoord got the job done, and sometimes that is all that matters.

REAL BETIS GET THE BETTER OF PORTO

Real Betis 3–2 FC Porto

Another five-goal thriller, another reminder of how unpredictable European football can be.

Real Betis emerged victorious against Porto in a contest that highlighted the attacking threat of both sides.

For Betis, this was an important result against opponents with considerable European pedigree.

Porto, meanwhile, will be disappointed to leave empty-handed after finding the net twice.

My take: Betis deserve credit for finding a way to win. Porto will need to improve defensively, because scoring twice and still losing is a frustrating habit for any team hoping to progress.

SHAKHTAR DONETSK CLAIM IMPORTANT VICTORY

Shakhtar Donetsk 3–1 AEK Athens

Shakhtar Donetsk delivered an impressive result against AEK Athens, scoring three times to secure the victory.

While some of Europe’s biggest clubs dominated the headlines, this was another significant result in the battle for league-phase points.

My take: Shakhtar are a team that should never be underestimated in European competition. They have a history of making life uncomfortable for opponents, and this victory gives them something positive to build upon.

STUTTGART TOO STRONG FOR SLOVAN BRATISLAVA

Slovan Bratislava 0–3 Stuttgart

Stuttgart produced a convincing away performance, scoring three unanswered goals against Slovan Bratislava.

While several matches on Wednesday turned into dramatic goal-fests, Stuttgart took care of business with a comfortable winning margin.

My take: Away victories are valuable in the Champions League, and winning by three goals without conceding is even better. Stuttgart will be pleased with both the points and the boost to their goal difference.

WHAT DID MATCHDAY 2 TEACH US?

Wednesday’s action provided plenty of talking points.

PSG showed that Manchester City can be beaten convincingly, even at the Etihad. Liverpool demonstrated frightening attacking potential but also revealed defensive weaknesses. Aston Villa announced themselves with a six-goal demolition, while Real Madrid once again found a way through a difficult European contest.

And then there was Bodø/Glimt, reminding everyone that the Champions League belongs to more than just the wealthy and established clubs.

The biggest lesson?

There are no guarantees in European football.

A famous badge cannot defend a corner, score a goal or win a tackle. Those things still have to be earned on the pitch.

FINAL WHISTLE

With Matchday 2 now completed, the 2026/27 Champions League is already delivering the kind of entertainment that makes this competition so special.

Eighteen matches across two evenings, plenty of goals and more than a few results that supporters will be discussing for days.

For some clubs, confidence is growing. For others, the warning signs are already flashing.

But this is only the beginning.

There is still a long road ahead before Europe’s next champion is crowned, and judging by what we witnessed this week, we are in for one fascinating journey.

Until the next matchday, keep enjoying the beautiful game.
