There are destinations you visit, and then there are places that seem to exist in their own delicious little universe.

Sun City is firmly in the latter camp.

Tucked into South Africa’s North West Province beside the wild landscapes of Pilanesberg, Sun City is an extravagant collision of resort glamour, African adventure, palm-fringed pools and unapologetic fun. One moment you can be sipping something cold beside a swimming pool; the next, you’re watching elephants wander across the bushveld.

It is wonderfully over-the-top — and that is precisely the point.

Whether you are escaping Johannesburg for a glamorous weekend, travelling with children, planning a romantic retreat or simply craving a few days where your biggest decision is spa, safari or champagne?, these are some of the best things to do in Sun City.
Make a Splash at the Valley of Waves

If Sun City has a signature experience, this is it.

  1. The Valley of Waves is an improbable tropical playground in the middle of the South African interior: palms, sand, shimmering water and the famous Roaring Lagoon, where waves roll towards the shore as though the ocean somehow took a very wrong turn and ended up in the North West.

But lounging on the beach is only half the story.

There is a lazy river for those who prefer their holidays horizontal, alongside slides and water attractions for anyone who likes a little more adrenaline with their sunshine. The legendary Temple of Courage delivers exactly what its name promises, plunging riders down a dramatic 17-metre drop.

My advice? Arrive early, claim your little patch of paradise and give yourself time to do absolutely nothing between adventures.

Because sometimes nothing is exactly what a holiday needs.
Lose Yourself in the Maze of the Lost City

There is something wonderfully theatrical about Sun City, and nowhere is that more apparent than at the Maze of the Lost City.

Reached via a 100-metre suspension bridge, the maze spreads across roughly half an acre and has been designed to evoke the atmosphere of an ancient archaeological discovery. From the bridge, you also get fabulous views across the resort towards The Palace and the surrounding landscape.

Then comes the challenge: finding your way through.

It is playful, slightly mysterious and surprisingly entertaining — particularly when everyone in your group is utterly convinced that they know the way out.

They usually don’t.
Go on Safari in Pilanesberg

And then Sun City reveals its wild side.

Right beside the resort lies Pilanesberg National Park, where the polished fantasy of swimming pools and cocktails gives way to open plains, rocky hills and the possibility of encountering Africa’s iconic wildlife.

Game drives can be arranged from Sun City, offering the chance to look for the Big Five and a remarkable variety of other animals.

There is something rather sublime about spending the morning wrapped in a jacket on an early safari, watching the bush wake beneath a pale African sky — and returning to the resort in time for a leisurely breakfast.

It is one of those delicious contrasts that makes Sun City different.
Float Above Africa in a Hot-Air Balloon

For something truly memorable, take to the skies.

Hot-air balloon safaris offer an entirely different perspective on the Pilanesberg landscape. Flights operate in the morning, weather permitting, combining the quiet spectacle of drifting above the bush with the possibility of spotting wildlife far below.

It is peaceful in a way that is difficult to describe.

No engines roaring. No frantic itinerary. Just enormous skies, wilderness stretching towards the horizon and that strange feeling that the rest of the world has temporarily disappeared.

If you are celebrating an anniversary, birthday or simply your excellent decision to take a holiday, put this one near the top of the list.
Chase an Adrenaline Rush

Sun City may do relaxation beautifully, but it is equally talented at destroying your hairstyle.

Adventure seekers can tackle experiences ranging from rope courses to mountain biking and the resort’s famous Zip 2000, one of its headline adrenaline attractions. The current schedule lists departures several times during the day from Tuesday to Sunday.

Prefer your adventure slightly closer to terra firma?

Explore the resort by Segway, try an outdoor activity or simply allow the more fearless members of your travelling party to do the terrifying things while you provide moral support from somewhere serving cappuccino.

Every group needs that person.
Play a Round of Golf

Golf at Sun City is serious business.

The resort has two Gary Player-designed golf courses, making it something of a pilgrimage for golfers. The Gary Player Country Club course is particularly famous and hosts the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

Even if you aren’t travelling specifically for golf, there is something undeniably beautiful about the manicured greens set against the rugged surrounding landscape.

And if eighteen holes aren’t remotely your idea of holiday bliss?

There is always the spa.
Surrender to the Spa

Eventually, even the most enthusiastic traveller deserves to stop.

Sun City offers spa and wellness experiences for precisely this purpose, including the Royal Spa and Salon.

Book a treatment. Turn off your phone. Forget what time it is.

There is a particular luxury in having nowhere else you need to be, and Sun City is the kind of destination where an afternoon devoted entirely to massage, swimming and lounging feels less like indulgence and more like responsible scheduling.
Wander Through Sun Central

Sooner or later, almost everyone finds themselves at Sun Central, the resort’s entertainment heart.

It is where you go when the children need entertaining, when the weather changes, when you fancy something lively or when you simply want to wander without having much of a plan.

Sun City’s entertainment offering extends from family activities and games to restaurants, shopping and nightlife.

That variety is one of the resort’s great strengths.

You don’t have to organise every hour.

Sometimes you simply follow the noise.
Dress Up for Dinner

After a day of water slides, safari dust and sunshine, Sun City provides ample opportunity to become glamorous again.

And you should.

One of the pleasures of staying at a resort like this is the transformation between day and night. Swimwear disappears. Linen, silk and perfume emerge. Dinner becomes an occasion rather than something squeezed between activities.

For a particularly romantic evening, linger over dinner, order dessert even if you insist you couldn’t possibly manage it, and take a slow walk afterwards.

Holidays are not the place for sensible desserts.
Experience The Palace of the Lost City

Even if you are not staying there, The Palace of the Lost City is part of the mythology of Sun City.

Grand, theatrical and deliberately fantastical, it feels less like a conventional hotel and more like someone’s extraordinarily elaborate dream of an African palace.

Its setting, gardens and extravagant architecture embody the particular magic of Sun City: reality turned up several notches.

If you are staying at The Palace, lean into it completely.

Have the long breakfast.

Order the cocktail.

Wear the dramatic sunglasses.

Nobody comes to the Lost City in search of minimalism.
Slow Down

Perhaps the most underrated thing to do at Sun City is also the simplest.

Stop.

Leave an afternoon gloriously empty.

Lie beside the pool beneath the African sun. Order something icy. Read three pages of a book before falling asleep. Wander through tropical gardens without checking the time.

With so much available, there can be a temptation to treat Sun City like an enormous checklist.

Don’t.

The loveliest luxury here is having nowhere you particularly need to be.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go

Sun City works equally well as a resort stay or a day trip, although staying overnight gives you considerably more time to enjoy its different personalities.

If you’re visiting for the day, book ahead rather than simply arriving at the gates. Current resort information states that day-visitor access is limited and tickets are sold through Ticketpro rather than at the resort itself. Hotel guests receive resort and Valley of Waves access as part of their stay.

Safari, ballooning and adventure experiences are also worth arranging in advance, particularly if there is one activity you absolutely don’t want to miss.

And bring options.

Swimsuit. Walking shoes. Something fabulous for dinner.

Sun City requires a surprisingly versatile suitcase.
The Sublime Verdict

Sun City isn’t subtle.

Thank goodness.

It is extravagant, nostalgic, playful and occasionally wonderfully ridiculous — a place where artificial beaches meet genuine African wilderness and where you can move from waterslide to safari vehicle to spa robe in the space of a single day.

Come for the famous Valley of Waves.

Stay for the safari mornings, lazy afternoons, dramatic sunsets and those unexpectedly magical moments between the headline attractions.

And somewhere between the first cocktail and the last glimpse of the Pilanesberg hills, you may discover the real secret of Sun City:

You don’t have to choose between adventure and indulgence.

Here, you can have both.
