SUNDAY FOOTBALL: GOALS, DRAMA & DERBY FIRE ACROSS EUROPE
City survive a Sunderland thriller, Liverpool get the job done, United are frustrated at Fulham, while Atlético rule Madrid
Sunday football rarely disappoints, and this weekend certainly delivered.
From an eight-goal shootout in Manchester to a tense afternoon on the south coast, a late twist at Craven Cottage and a huge Madrid derby in Spain, there was plenty to keep football fans glued to the action.
Here’s the Sublime Sunday Round-Up.
PREMIER LEAGUE — CITY AND SUNDERLAND SERVE UP A CLASSIC
Manchester City 5–3 Sunderland
Eight goals. End-to-end football. And Sunderland refusing to go quietly.
Manchester City eventually walked away with all three points, but Sunderland made sure this was anything but a routine afternoon at the Etihad.
City’s attacking quality ultimately made the difference, with Antoine Semenyo scoring twice and Erling Haaland getting on the scoresheet late on.
But Sunderland had their own star of the afternoon.
Brian Brobbey completed a hat-trick, repeatedly dragging his side back into a contest that threatened to get away from them.
For City, it’s another victory and another demonstration of their attacking firepower. For Sunderland, there may be no points to take home, but scoring three at the Etihad certainly gives them something to build on.
Sublime Take: If you’re going to lose, you might as well make the champions sweat for it. Sunderland certainly did that.
BOURNEMOUTH 0–1 LIVERPOOL — NOT PRETTY, BUT JOB DONE
Liverpool didn’t need a spectacular performance. They just needed the goal.
And they got it.
A tight afternoon at Bournemouth was eventually settled by Alexander Isak, whose second-half finish proved enough to send Liverpool home with all three points.
Bournemouth weren’t simply there to make up the numbers. They caused Liverpool problems and created opportunities of their own, forcing the visitors to stay switched on until the final whistle.
But these are exactly the sort of afternoons that can become important over the course of a season.
You won’t always dominate. You won’t always score three or four. Sometimes the difference between challenging at the top and dropping points is simply finding a way to win.
Liverpool found it.
Sublime Take: One goal, three points. No complaints. Sometimes that’s championship football.
FULHAM 1–1 MANCHESTER UNITED — CUNHA TO THE RESCUE
Manchester United travelled to Craven Cottage looking for momentum but instead found themselves involved in another frustrating afternoon.
United had chances, with Bruno Fernandes hitting the woodwork, but they couldn’t turn their opportunities into an early advantage.
Fulham eventually broke through when the ball went in via Lisandro Martínez for an own goal, putting United in serious danger of leaving London empty-handed.
Then came the late escape.
With the clock approaching 90 minutes, Matheus Cunha struck the equaliser, his effort taking a deflection before finding the net.
United rescued a point. Fulham were left wondering how close they’d come to taking all three.
For Manchester United, though, the bigger issue remains consistency. A late equaliser is better than defeat, but draws won’t satisfy a club trying to push itself back towards the top end of the Premier League.
Sublime Take: Cunha saved the afternoon — but Manchester United will know they need to start turning these rescue missions into victories.
ELSEWHERE IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE
Bournemouth 0–1 Liverpool
Leeds United 0–0 Crystal Palace
Manchester City 5–3 Sunderland
Fulham 1–1 Manchester United
City provided the goals, Liverpool provided the efficiency, Leeds and Palace cancelled each other out, and United needed a late intervention to avoid defeat.
Not a bad Sunday afternoon.
SERIE A — JUVENTUS MAKE THEIR MOVE
Over in Italy, Sunday brought a mixture of tight contests and important early-season points.
Fiorentina and Napoli drew 1–1, while Frosinone beat Como 2–0 and Parma edged Genoa 2–1.
Juventus were also in action against Atalanta, while AC Milan’s meeting with Lecce was scheduled to round off the evening.
With Serie A often decided by the smallest margins, those early points can become extremely valuable once the table begins taking shape.
And as usual in Italy, nobody should expect the story to remain simple for long.
LA LIGA — MADRID BELONGS TO ATLÉTICO
Atlético Madrid 2–1 Real Madrid
Now this was the heavyweight clash of the day.
Madrid derby. Red and white against white. Bragging rights on the line.
And Atlético delivered.
A 2–1 victory over Real Madrid gave Atlético a huge result in front of their supporters and added another chapter to one of European football’s fiercest rivalries.
Real were also reduced to ten men following Dean Huijsen’s dismissal, making their attempt to fight back even more difficult.
Derbies aren’t always about beautiful football. They’re about moments, emotion and making sure the other half of the city hears about the result all week.
Atlético accomplished exactly that.
Sublime Take: Madrid is going to be a very different colour on Monday morning.
Elsewhere, Getafe beat Málaga 1–0, while the later Spanish fixtures continued an already busy Sunday programme.
SUBLIME FINAL WHISTLE
What a Sunday.
Manchester City and Sunderland gave us the goal-fest.
Liverpool showed that winning ugly still counts.
Manchester United needed Cunha to rescue them.
Juventus were looking to make their mark in Italy.
And Atlético Madrid walked away from the derby with the result their supporters wanted most.
Different leagues. Different stories. Same beautiful game.
