Arsenal arrived at the Amex with a perfect Premier League record and looking like a team ready to continue where they left off last season.

They left with their first league defeat of the campaign. And this wasn’t a lucky 1–0 where Brighton scored from their only chance and spent the rest of the afternoon defending.

Brighton deserved it.They were aggressive, confident and clinical when their opportunities arrived.

Arsenal simply couldn’t handle them.Brighton Set the Tone

You could tell very early that Brighton weren’t interested in showing the champions too much respect.They pressed Arsenal, forced mistakes and made life uncomfortable for Mikel Arteta’s side.Arsenal had possession, but possession doesn’t mean much when you’re not doing anything dangerous with it.

Brighton looked sharper.They looked hungrier.And most importantly, they looked like the team more likely to score.The warning signs were already there before Pascal Groß finally punished Arsenal.

The breakthrough arrived in the 31st minute.Pascal Groß found the space Arsenal had been allowing Brighton and made them pay.1–0.

At that point Arsenal needed a reaction.They nearly got one when Bukayo Saka had an opportunity shortly before half-time, but Bart Verbruggen produced the save.

Then came the moment that completely changed the feeling of the game.Instead of Arsenal going into the break level, Brighton went straight up the other end and scored again.

Charalampos Kostoulas made it 2–0.From potentially 1–1 to 2–0 in a matter of seconds.

Brutal.And suddenly Arsenal had a mountain to climb.

No Arsenal Comeback

You expected Arsenal to come flying out after half-time.This is the Premier League champions we’re talking about.Surely there would be a response?Instead, Brighton scored again.

Chema Andrés headed home from Groß’s corner in the 57th minute.3–0.Game over.

Arsenal still had more than half an hour to find something, but Brighton never really looked like a team about to collapse.

If anything, they could have scored more.David Raya was needed to prevent the scoreline becoming even uglier, while Brighton also struck the woodwork late on.For Arsenal, it was simply one of those afternoons where very little worked.

Give Brighton Their Credit

Whenever one of the Premier League’s biggest teams loses, the conversation immediately becomes about what they did wrong.And yes, Arsenal were poor.

But Brighton deserve enormous credit.They didn’t accidentally beat Arsenal 3–0.They earned it.

Fabian Hürzeler’s team pressed with intensity, attacked with confidence and took advantage whenever Arsenal made mistakes.They weren’t intimidated by Arsenal’s reputation.

They went after them.That’s exactly what you want to see from a team playing at home.

Arsenal Looked Surprisingly Vulnerable.What surprised me most was how uncomfortable Arsenal looked defensively.This is normally one of the strongest parts of Arteta’s team.

But Brighton found spaces far too easily.Players weren’t being closed down quickly enough, there were mistakes in possession and Arsenal never seemed completely comfortable with Brighton’s pressure.

The third goal summed it up.A corner comes into the box and Andrés is able to head home.Against a team with Arsenal’s defensive standards, you simply don’t expect to see it.But this wasn’t Arsenal’s afternoon.

One Defeat Doesn’t Change Everything

Let’s also keep some perspective.Arsenal had won their opening four Premier League games before travelling to Brighton.One bad performance doesn’t suddenly make them a bad team.

They are still the defending champions and there is far too much quality in this squad to start talking about some kind of crisis after one defeat.But the manner of the defeat will concern Arteta.

Losing happens.Getting beaten 3–0 and looking second best for long periods is different.The international break now gives Arsenal time to analyse exactly what went wrong.

Brighton Are Looking Dangerous

For Brighton, this feels like more than just three points.They’ve sent a message.Beat the Premier League champions 3–0 and people are going to notice.The confidence in this Brighton team is obvious, especially going forward.They play without fear.

They commit players to attacks.And when they smell weakness, they go for it.

That’s exactly what Arsenal discovered at the Amex.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes football gives you a result that reminds everyone why the Premier League can be so unpredictable.

Arsenal arrived with a perfect league record.Brighton didn’t care.

They pressed them, punished them and ultimately deserved the three points.

For Arsenal, it’s their first real setback of the season.How they respond will tell us much more than this one defeat.
