Spurs 2–3 Aston Villa: Same Problems, Different Week as Tottenham Fall Apart Again

Tottenham Hotspur 2–3 Aston Villa.

Another defeat. Another afternoon where Spurs showed us just enough to make you think things might finally be changing, only to throw it all away.

And somehow, despite scoring our first two Premier League goals of the season, I came away from this game feeling worse rather than better.

Because the scoreline makes this look closer than it really was.

A Good Start – But We Have Heard That Before

For large parts of the first half, Spurs actually played some decent football.

There was energy, there was movement and, for once, we looked capable of causing problems going forward. Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was forced into saves and Spurs were finding spaces that simply haven’t been there enough this season.

Savio in particular looked dangerous when running at Villa. But football isn’t about looking good for 20 or 30 minutes.

You have to score.And Spurs didn’t.

Pedro Porro going off injured after just 18 minutes didn’t help matters either, but Tottenham still had opportunities to take control of the game.Then came the sucker punch.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Johan Manzambi put Aston Villa ahead.After everything Spurs had done reasonably well in that first half, we somehow walked down the tunnel 1–0 behind.It felt painfully predictable.

Second Half Collapse.Whatever momentum Spurs had disappeared after the break.

 

Mohammed Kudus came on and briefly looked to have finally ended Tottenham’s Premier League goal drought when he put the ball into the net.Of course, it was ruled out.

Andy Robertson was offside in the build-up.At that point you could almost feel the frustration around the stadium.

Then Villa punished us.Nicolas Jackson made it 2–0 in the 67th minute before Emi Buendia produced a brilliant strike to make it 3–0 with 11 minutes remaining.

Game over.Or at least it should have been.

Spurs Finally Score

Conor Gallagher finally gave Tottenham supporters something to celebrate by scoring our first Premier League goal of the season.Yes, it has taken until the fifth league game.

That sentence alone tells you plenty about where Spurs are right now.Jan Paul van Hecke then headed in another and suddenly it was 3–2.

For a few minutes there was hope.Could Spurs somehow rescue something from a game they had completely lost control of?

No.Villa held on and left North London with all three points.The late comeback might make the result look respectable, but we can’t allow those two goals to hide what happened before them.

Questions for Roberto De Zerbi

This is where the pressure really starts building on Roberto De Zerbi. Five Premier League games.

No wins.Two points.And Spurs head into the international break in the relegation zone.

Nobody expected everything to click immediately under a new manager with a squad that has changed significantly, but there has to be progress.Right now, it’s difficult to see enough of it.

The most frustrating thing is that there are moments when you can see what this Spurs team could become.

There were periods against Villa where the passing was quicker, players found space and Tottenham actually looked dangerous.

But those moments don’t win football matches.Goals do.Defending properly does.Managing difficult moments does.Spurs aren’t doing enough of any of them.

The Same Story Again

That’s what worries me most.We’ve seen this movie before.Start brightly.

Don’t take our chances.Concede.Lose confidence.Make mistakes.Then suddenly start playing when the game is almost gone.

You cannot keep giving Premier League teams a head start and expect to rescue matches in the final ten minutes.Villa were clinical when their opportunities arrived.

Spurs weren’t.Sometimes football really is that simple.

One Positive – The Goal Drought Is Over

If we’re desperately searching for something positive, at least Tottenham finally scored.Gallagher got the first and Van Hecke got the second.

Hopefully that removes some of the pressure that has clearly been building around this team.But let’s not celebrate losing 3–2 at home because we scored a couple of late goals.Tottenham Hotspur should have much higher standards than that.

Where Do Spurs Go From Here?

Maybe the international break has arrived at the right time.De Zerbi now has time to think.

Because something has to change.Whether that’s the system, the personnel or simply the mentality of this team, Spurs cannot keep producing the same mistakes every week and expecting different results.

Two points from five games isn’t unlucky.It’s poor.

And sitting in the relegation zone after five Premier League matches should be setting alarm bells off throughout the club.Nobody should be talking about panic after five games.

But concern?Absolutely.

There is talent in this Tottenham squad.Now we need to start seeing a team.

Because after another defeat at home, patience is going to start running out very quickly.

Final score: Tottenham Hotspur 2–3 Aston Villa.

A better start. A late fightback.

But ultimately?

Same old problems.
