Chelsea survived a remarkable late Brighton fightback to win 4–3, maintaining their perfect Premier League start under Xabi Alonso. The result was positive; the performance was a mixture of genuinely exciting attacking football and some worrying defensive instability. Chelsea came flying out and was a joy to watch. Chelsea’s opening half-hour was probably their best spell of the young season.
Roméo Lavia opened the scoring in the fourth minute, before Pedro Neto doubled the advantage in the 14th. João Pedro then made it 3–0 around the half-hour mark, scoring against his former club.
The interesting part wasn’t simply the goals. Chelsea were attacking Brighton quickly rather than endlessly circulating possession.
With Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers operating around João Pedro, there was plenty of movement between Brighton’s midfield and defensive lines. Neto provided the direct running, while Lavia gave Chelsea the ability to progress through midfield. They saying this could be the strongest offensive trio in the premiership
Brighton struggled badly whenever Chelsea accelerated.Chelsea have plenty of technically gifted midfielders, but Lavia offers something slightly different: he can receive under pressure, turn away from the first challenge and immediately move Chelsea forward.

Against Brighton’s aggressive pressing, having a midfielder comfortable receiving with opponents behind him allowed Chelsea to escape pressure and attack the space Brighton left behind.
João Pedro continues to fit perfectly and scoring against Brighton almost felt inevitable.
What makes him interesting in this Chelsea attack isn’t simply his finishing. He doesn’t behave like a traditional No.9.He drops away from the centre-backs, combines with Palmer and Rogers and then attacks the penalty area again. That movement makes Chelsea difficult to mark because defenders have to decide whether to follow him or allow him to receive between the lines.
Chelsea’s starting XI essentially used Palmer, Rogers and João Pedro as an interchangeable attacking triangle behind and around Neto’s movement. And when it clicked, Brighton couldn’t handle it.

But then Chelsea made the match unnecessarily chaotic. This is where Alonso will have complaints.
Malick Yalcouyé pulled one back for Brighton before halftime, meaning Chelsea went into the interval 3–1 ahead rather than completely killing the contest. Brighton then began finding much more space.
Instead of Chelsea continuing to control possession after establishing the lead, the match became increasingly transitional. That suited Brighton.Brighton’s ability to retain the ball and push Chelsea backwards demonstrated that the Blues aren’t yet completely comfortable controlling matches once the initial attacking intensity disappears.
And Brighton were rewarded.
3–2 changed everything.Brighton’s second came via a João Pedro own goal in the 63rd minute.
That’s probably the biggest criticism of Chelsea’s performance. Elite teams don’t merely establish two- or three-goal advantages. They understand how to make the following 20 minutes boring.Chelsea didn’t.Their attacking ambition remained, but their control disappeared.
Then Cole Palmer did Cole Palmer things. When Chelsea needed somebody to calm the stadium, Palmer delivered the fourth in the 74th minute 4–2. And that goal mattered beyond the scoreline.
Palmer hadn’t necessarily dominated every phase of the match, but that’s increasingly irrelevant with him. He possesses the rare ability to spend periods operating on the edge of proceedings and then suddenly decide the game.
Chelsea now have multiple dangerous attackers around him, which may actually make Palmer more difficult to defend.
Chelsea ultimately survived. But conceding three at home after going 3–0 ahead is something Alonso will have to address. There is a difference between playing attacking football and allowing a match to become uncontrolled.
Emiliano Martínez’s debut. His experience, communication and command of the penalty area could be particularly valuable for such a young defensive unit. The bigger challenge is establishing coordination between goalkeeper, centre-backs and midfield quickly enough that Chelsea don’t keep producing games this open.
The encouraging part is that Chelsea have now won their opening two Premier League matches.
