Stay for the things that take a little longer to notice.<\/em><\/p>\n At Augrabies, the Orange River gives itself away before you see it. In Namaqualand, a hillside that looked bare from the road can turn out to be crowded with flowers. And in Sutherland, the longer you stand outside after dark, the more sky there seems to be.<\/p>\n The Northern Cape is easy to underestimate from behind a windscreen. The distances are long, and there\u2019s always another stretch of road ahead. The pleasure is in knowing when to stop. Here are ten places worth doing just that.<\/p>\n Leave Twee Rivieren while the folds of the red dunes still hold the night\u2019s shadow. Along the dry riverbeds, a gemsbok\u2019s horns are easy to pick out against the sand. A lion lying in the shade takes a second look. Stay overnight if you can, and give yourself a drive at either end of the day. The South African side of the park also encompasses the UNESCO-listed \u01c2Khomani Cultural Landscape, where dunes, plants and water sources are bound up with generations of San knowledge and history.<\/p>\n Follow the walkways to the lip of the granite gorge. When the Orange River is running high, spray rises into the light and the roar makes conversation feel beside the point. Give the rest of the park an afternoon, too. Around Moon Rock, you can see the breadth of the rocky country the river runs through. The falls change with the water level, so the gorge can have a different voice each time you visit.<\/p>\n At Skilpad, take the five-kilometre trail on a sunny day. From the road, a hillside can look like a single wash of orange. On foot, you begin to see the smaller flowers tucked between the shrubs and the patches where one colour gives way to another. August and September are the usual months to aim for. Rain and warmth determine when the flowers put on their best show, so check the park\u2019s bloom updates before choosing dates.<\/p>\n Visit the South African Astronomical Observatory by day to learn about the Southern African Large Telescope, then return for a separately booked stargazing session with the visitor telescopes. Before you take your turn at the eyepiece, give your eyes a few minutes to settle. Stars begin to show in patches of sky that looked empty when you arrived. Bring a warm layer and leave a little room in your plans for cloud.<\/p>\n At the Big Hole, start on the viewing platform. It takes a moment for the eye to make sense of the depth of the old excavation. Then walk through the museum and the historic streetscape, where the shopfronts bring the story back to the scale of an ordinary working day. Seen together, the streets and the pit give you a sense of how closely a town\u2019s fortunes could be tied to the ground beneath it.<\/p>\n Beyond Sendelingsdrift, the tracks wind through dry riverbeds and stony mountains. Drive slowly enough to notice the succulents holding their ground among the rocks. Stay overnight if your route allows, and watch the last sunlight leave the slopes. Take a 4\u00d74, extra water and a spare wheel, and check the park\u2019s crossing notices if you\u2019re continuing into Namibia.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n From the road, the river is a strip of green through dry country. From a raft, it sets the pace. On the quiet stretches, you can rest your paddle and watch the rock faces go by. Then comes the quick work of a rapid. On a guided overnight trip, the day can end on a sandy bank with the sound of moving water close by. Ask your outfitter what to expect at the prevailing river level.<\/p>\n The Heaviside Trail drops over a dune, skirts the rocks and opens onto a long white beach. At low tide, the rock pools give you a reason to slow down. An African black oystercatcher working the shore can keep you still for longer than you meant to stop. The trail runs six kilometres one way, so arrange a pickup or give yourself enough time to walk back.<\/p>\n The gravel road climbs the Roggeveld escarpment in tight bends. At each turn a little more of the Tankwa comes into view, until the road you\u2019ve just driven is a pale thread across the plain. Take the bends slowly and stop where there\u2019s room to pull over. Ask SANParks about road conditions before setting out, especially after rain.<\/p>\n Southwest of Kimberley, camel thorns stand scattered across open plains. The trees give Mokala its name, and the plains give you room to look for sable, roan and tsessebe. After a slow drive, stop somewhere permitted, switch off the engine and watch a single tree for a while.
