Day four of the final Test between South Africa and Australia in Cape Town belonged to two batters who refused to let the series slip away. Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder scored determined centuries, transforming South Africa’s uncertain position into a genuine opportunity to win the match.

By stumps, the Proteas were all out for 387, leaving Australia a target of 288. With the series level at 1–1, their partnership had ensured that the contest would reach its final day with both teams still in contention.

South Africa began the morning on 140 for four, just 40 runs ahead after conceding a first-innings deficit of 100. There was little room for error. Australia had the chance to take the remaining wickets cheaply and leave their batters a manageable chase.

When Matthew Breetzke fell for 43, South Africa were 181 for five. Rickelton and Mulder then supplied the partnership the home side desperately needed, adding 154 for the sixth wicket. Rickelton made 101 from 219 deliveries, while Mulder eventually finished with 115 from 221.

Their greatest contribution was to change the rhythm of the match. Every over they survived increased South Africa’s lead and forced Australia to spend more time in the field. A position that had favoured the visitors became increasingly uncomfortable as the partnership grew.

Rickelton’s innings demonstrated the value of restraint. With wickets already lost and the series in the balance, building an innings mattered more than forcing the scoring rate. Mulder matched that patience, giving South Africa the stability to look beyond survival and towards setting a competitive target.

Australia finally broke through with an outstanding piece of fielding. Josh Inglis’s diving stop and throw to Marnus Labuschagne brought about Rickelton’s run-out, ending the partnership and opening the way for a late burst of wickets.

That passage exposed how vulnerable South Africa remained once the established pair were separated. The lead was growing, but the innings could still have ended too quickly. Mulder’s response was therefore crucial. He completed his century and helped squeeze valuable runs from the final partnership before becoming the last batter dismissed.

Australia’s bowlers had endured a demanding day. Mitchell Starc returned figures of three for 65, while Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon took two wickets apiece. South Africa’s recovery had made them work far harder than the overnight position might have suggested.

From a South African perspective, the satisfaction lies in how the team responded to pressure. Rickelton and Mulder gave the bowlers something substantial to defend and restored belief after Australia had held the advantage.

Still, 288 is a target that offers opportunity to both sides. South Africa must turn scoreboard pressure into wickets; Australia must build partnerships without allowing the required runs to become an overwhelming distraction.

My verdict on day four is that South Africa earned their way back into the contest through disciplined batting. They have not secured victory, but they have created the chance to fight for it. After beginning the day in danger of losing control of the decider, the Proteas finished it with a clear route to a series win.
