Arsenal’s Carabao Cup campaign ended at Highbury Stadium on 27 October as Fleetwood Town delivered a memorable upset. After a 1–1 draw, the League Two side converted all five penalties to win the shootout 5–3 and advance to the quarter-finals. For Arsenal, it was an evening of missed opportunities; for Fleetwood, a result to cherish.

Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave the hosts the lead in the 21st minute, leaving Arsenal with an uncomfortable task. An early goal is precious for any underdog: it gives the players something to protect and makes every passing minute more significant for the favourites. Viktor Gyökeres eventually equalised in the 50th minute, but Arsenal could not turn that breakthrough into victory.

The equaliser should have provided the platform for Arsenal to take control of the result. Instead, Fleetwood kept the contest alive. That distinction matters. Creating opportunities can suggest superiority, but cup ties are settled by what a team does with them.

Arsenal had enough quality on the pitch to expect more. Gyökeres and Kai Havertz started, while Martin Ødegaard featured after the interval. Havertz failed to make the most of his chances, and Jay Lynch produced crucial late saves to deny Ben White and Ødegaard. Fleetwood’s goalkeeper ensured that Arsenal’s pressure did not become a winning goal.

Max Dowman’s late dismissal added another complication for the visitors. Yet it would be too convenient to make the red card the whole explanation for Arsenal’s exit. Their difficulty in establishing a decisive lead had already given Fleetwood a route to the shootout.

Once penalties arrived, Fleetwood were clinical. Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães’s attempt before Conor Haughey converted the decisive kick. The hosts had survived the pressure of the closing stages and then handled the shootout with remarkable composure.

My main takeaway is that Arsenal allowed a recoverable situation to become a dangerous one. Drawing level early in the second half gave them time to finish the job. Their failure to do so left the outcome dependent on individual spot-kicks, where their reputation offered no protection.

Fleetwood deserve the centre of this story. They took their opening, recovered from conceding and delivered when the tie demanded precision. Calling the result an Arsenal failure is fair, but it only tells half the story.

For the Gunners, this was a painful lesson in finishing. For Fleetwood, it was proof of what can happen when a team stays in the contest long enough to seize its moment.
