Another difficult result. Another round of managerial speculation. Manchester United supporters know the routine by now.

Michael Carrick is under severe pressure following Sunday’s 3–0 home defeat to Bournemouth. United’s winless run has reached eight matches, and reports identify Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann as the leading candidates if the club decides to replace him. That distinction matters: a possible vacancy is still different from a confirmed appointment.

But if United do make a change, which direction makes sense?

Eddie Howe: the practical option

According to Sky Sports, Howe would be interested in discussions should the position become available. He is currently available without compensation after leaving Newcastle in July. His Premier League experience also reportedly appeals to United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox.

There is a sensible argument here. United need someone who can establish expectations quickly and make the team’s work during the week visible on matchday.

My concern would be treating Howe as a guaranteed safe appointment. There is no such thing at Old Trafford. He would still need authority, suitable recruitment and patience when the first difficult spell arrives.

Appointing him would have to mean backing his methods, even when the excitement of a new manager wears off.

Julian Nagelsmann: the ambitious option

Nagelsmann is the other reported frontrunner. Like Howe, he could start quickly without a compensation payment. He also has an existing connection with recruitment chief Christopher Vivell from their time at RB Leipzig.

The appeal is easy to understand. His appointment would invite the hope that United could develop a more demanding, coherent way of playing.

The question is how that ambition would survive contact with the current squad. Any coach introducing complex ideas needs players who understand their jobs and repeat them under pressure. Otherwise, tactical ambition becomes another explanation for why the team looks confused.

I would want United to establish what Nagelsmann needs before offering him the job. Which players fit? Which positions need strengthening? How much can realistically change during the season?

Those conversations matter more than an impressive unveiling.

Conte and Emery: still worth discussing

Antonio Conte and Unai Emery have also been considered, although Sky reports that neither is among the current favourites and that Emery remains committed to Aston Villa.

Conte would tempt supporters who want stronger demands placed on the players. Understandable. But United would need complete agreement about authority and recruitment before making that appointment.

Emery would deserve serious consideration if he became attainable. The difficulty is that admiring a manager does not make him available. United need a realistic appointment process, with alternatives they actually believe in.

My verdict

Of the two reported leaders, I would lean towards Howe for the immediate task. That is a judgment about what United need now: clearer responsibilities, consistent standards and a team that functions together.

Nagelsmann would be an intriguing choice if the club is prepared to support a substantial footballing rebuild.

Either way, United’s leadership must explain why its chosen manager fits the squad and the direction of the club.

Supporters have heard enough about fresh starts. They deserve to see what the next one is supposed to achieve.
