South African football has been dealt a massive blow after Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs both failed to reach the group stages of their respective CAF competitions. For two of the country’s biggest clubs, this is a disappointing outcome that raises serious questions about their performances on the continental stage.

For the supporters who travelled, bought tickets and believed their teams would deliver, the disappointment is understandable. Expectations were high, but football has once again reminded us that reputation alone does not win matches.

Mamelodi Sundowns entered the CAF Champions League as defending champions, with hopes of continuing their dominance on the African stage. However, those ambitions came crashing down after a 1-1 draw against Angola’s Wiliete SC at Loftus Versfeld.

After the first leg ended goalless, Sundowns needed to finish the job at home. Tashreeq Matthews gave the Brazilians an early lead, but Wiliete found an equaliser and held on to advance on the away-goals rule.

The result is a painful one for a club that has established itself as one of Africa’s leading teams. Sundowns had the home advantage and opportunities to change the outcome, but they could not find the decisive goal.

For a team with championship ambitions, this is a setback that cannot simply be brushed aside. The players and technical team will have to look honestly at what went wrong, particularly when it comes to converting chances and managing pressure in crucial moments.

Kaizer Chiefs also have plenty to think about after their CAF Confederation Cup campaign ended against Zambia’s Red Arrows.

Amakhosi went into the second leg needing to overturn a 1-0 first-leg defeat. Bradley Cross scored in Durban to level the tie on aggregate, but Chiefs could not secure qualification and were eliminated following a penalty shoot-out.

For Chiefs supporters, the result is another frustrating chapter in the club’s efforts to re-establish itself as a force in South African and African football.

There is no doubt that the expectations surrounding Kaizer Chiefs remain enormous. The club has a proud history and a passionate fan base, but history cannot win matches on its own. Performances on the pitch must match the size of the badge.

The elimination also raises questions about the team’s ability to handle high-pressure situations. When a continental tie reaches its decisive moments, composure, execution and decision-making can make the difference between progress and disappointment.

Having Sundowns and Chiefs eliminated before the group stages is a difficult result for local football, although the circumstances surrounding the two exits are different.

Sundowns were defending the biggest club prize in African football, while Chiefs were competing in the Confederation Cup. Both clubs will now have to redirect their attention towards their remaining domestic commitments.

The bigger issue is consistency. South African clubs have the resources, supporters and talent to compete across the continent, but those advantages must translate into results when the pressure is at its highest.

Continental football demands more than possession, big names and a strong reputation. Teams must be clinical in front of goal, disciplined defensively and mentally prepared for difficult away trips and decisive home fixtures.

These exits should serve as a reminder that no club is too big to fail.

While Sundowns and Chiefs are left to reflect on their eliminations, Orlando Pirates have provided a positive story by securing their place in the CAF Champions League group stages.

Pirates defeated Namibia’s African Stars 4-0 in the second leg to complete a 5-0 aggregate victory. Their qualification offers South African football supporters something to look forward to as the continental campaign continues.

For the Buccaneers, the challenge now is to build on that momentum and prove that they can compete against Africa’s strongest sides.

Their progress also highlights the contrasting fortunes of the country’s leading clubs. One team has taken an important step forward, while two others must return to the drawing board.

For Sundowns, the immediate priority will be to recover from the disappointment and ensure that one poor continental campaign does not derail the rest of the season. The club still has domestic objectives to pursue, but the manner of this elimination will demand serious reflection.

For Chiefs, the focus must be on learning from the Red Arrows defeat and continuing the work needed to restore consistency and confidence. Supporters want progress, but they also want performances that demonstrate ambition and accountability.

Both clubs have the opportunity to respond on the pitch. The question is whether they can turn this disappointment into motivation.

The elimination of Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs is a wake-up call for two clubs that carry enormous expectations. Sundowns will feel the pain of losing their chance to defend the CAF Champions League title, while Chiefs will be disappointed that their Confederation Cup journey ended before the group stages.

For supporters, the frustration is real. But the only meaningful response now is to learn, improve and deliver better results in the competitions that remain.

In football, yesterday’s achievements count for little when today’s performances fall short. The badge may command respect, but qualification must be earned on the pitch.

South African football deserves better continental campaigns, and both clubs will know that their supporters expect a stronger response next time.
