South Africa gave their supporters plenty to celebrate on the fifth day of the second Test at St George’s Park, beating Australia by an innings and 31 runs to level the three-match series at 1–1. After rain threatened to frustrate the hosts, the Proteas found the wickets they needed to turn a remarkable recovery into victory.

For fans in Port Elizabeth, now Gqeberha, this was a day that demanded patience. With the start delayed by a wet outfield and further drizzle, every interruption made the task more uncomfortable for South Africa. Australia had an opportunity to escape, provided their remaining batters could occupy the crease long enough.

Travis Head gave them a fighting chance. His determined 121 brought substance to Australia’s second innings, while nightwatchman Scott Boland offered stubborn support with 40 from 166 deliveries. Together, they made South Africa work for a result that had looked much more straightforward after Australia’s first-innings collapse.

There is a particular tension to the final day of a Test when one side is chasing wickets and the other is chasing time. A quiet over can feel like a small victory for the batting team. For the bowlers, the challenge is to keep asking questions without letting impatience take over.

South Africa eventually broke through the resistance and dismissed Australia for 295. Coming after the visitors had managed only 99 in their first innings, that improved effort could not repair the damage. The follow-on had left Australia with too much to do.

Although the fifth day belonged to the push for wickets, the foundation of the victory had been laid by Temba Bavuma. His 179 helped transform South Africa’s innings from a worrying 110 for six into 425 for nine declared. That recovery changed what was possible for the hosts and gave their attack the platform to dictate the rest of the match.

What makes this win satisfying from a South African perspective is the resolve behind it. The Proteas had been in serious trouble, yet found a way to recover, establish control and finish the job despite the interruptions.

Australia can take encouragement from Head and Boland’s determination, but their batting has left questions to answer. South Africa, meanwhile, head towards the deciding Test with renewed belief.

PE has delivered the turnaround. Now the series has a finale worthy of the rivalry.
