There are days when supporting the Proteas requires a strong cup of tea and a generous supply of patience. The opening two days of the second Test against Australia at St George\u2019s Park have called for both.<\/p>\n
Rain has taken away much of the cricket, but the passages we have seen have carried plenty of tension. Australia have made their opportunities count, South Africa have had to scrap for their runs, and Temba Bavuma has given home supporters something to hold on to.<\/p>\n
At stumps on Day Two, the Proteas were 97\/5 after 43 overs<\/strong>, with Bavuma unbeaten on 41<\/strong> and Wiaan Mulder alongside him on 2<\/strong>. It is a difficult position, certainly, but there is still a captain at the crease and an innings to rescue.<\/p>\n Sunday in PE \u2014 Gqeberha, as we now know it \u2014 offered precious little playing time. Only 12.2 overs<\/strong> were possible, with South Africa finishing on 20\/2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Australia won the toss and chose to bowl. Their decision to select Scott Boland in place of Nathan Lyon quickly became a major talking point, because Boland needed very little time to leave his mark.<\/p>\n Aiden Markram was bowled for 11<\/strong>, beaten by a delivery that moved back into him. David Bedingham then edged behind off the very next ball and departed without scoring. Two deliveries, two wickets, and suddenly a shortened day felt rather long for South African supporters.<\/p>\n That is the uncomfortable beauty of Test cricket. You can wait for hours for something to happen, then find the whole mood altered in a minute.<\/p>\n For debutant Marques Ackerman, it was a demanding introduction. Opening against Australia is a considerable assignment in any weather. Having your first innings broken into fragments by rain hardly makes the task easier.<\/p>\n The frustration was shared beyond the boundary. When so little cricket is possible, every inspection becomes an event and every glimpse of brighter sky feels like a promise. Unfortunately, the weather was reluctant to keep its promises.<\/p>\n Monday brought more waiting before the cricket finally resumed. When it did, Australia returned with their discipline intact.<\/p>\n Boland removed Ackerman, caught behind by Alex Carey, before Mitchell Starc dismissed Matthew Breetzke. South Africa\u2019s attempt to rebuild was under pressure again. Josh Hazlewood was absent through illness, but Australia still found enough threat in their attack to make batting uncomfortable.<\/p>\n From a Proteas perspective, the concern is how quickly an innings can become dependent on a small number of players. Each early dismissal adds another responsibility to the batters who remain: survive the good deliveries, find runs somewhere, and somehow settle everyone\u2019s nerves.<\/p>\n It is a demanding balancing act. Simply staying in can allow the bowlers to dictate everything. Trying to force the pace carries its own dangers.<\/p>\n Through it all, Bavuma stayed.<\/p>\n His 41 not out from 108 balls<\/strong> was the kind of contribution whose importance stretches beyond the number beside his name. With wickets falling around him, he kept South Africa\u2019s innings alive.<\/p>\n There was room for enterprise, too. A hook for six off Pat Cummins provided a welcome reminder that resistance can include a little defiance.<\/p>\n Ryan Rickelton supplied valuable support with 31<\/strong>, and their partnership offered the most encouraging passage of South Africa\u2019s batting. For a while, there was something to build around: two batters collecting runs and making Australia work.<\/p>\n Those are the moments supporters cling to during a difficult Test. A partnership does more than change the score. It changes how the next hour looks. Suddenly, you start considering what might be possible if these two can stay together until the close.<\/p>\n Rickelton\u2019s dismissal brought that hope to an abrupt halt.<\/p>\n An edge off Boland was taken one-handed by Matt Renshaw at first slip, ending Rickelton\u2019s innings with South Africa on 92\/5<\/strong>. It was a superb piece of fielding and a painful moment for the home side, arriving when the partnership had begun to offer some stability.<\/p>\n You can admire a catch and wish, quite sincerely, that it had gone down.<\/p>\n Boland finished the day with 4\/31<\/strong>, while Starc had 1\/27<\/strong>. The figures reflect how effectively Australia have used the limited cricket available to them.<\/p>\n South Africa need a partnership. Then they need another.<\/p>\n Bavuma and Mulder\u2019s first task on Day Three will be to get through the opening exchanges and give the innings some breathing room. Any recovery will have to come through patient decisions, useful contributions and a willingness to keep working when scoring is difficult.<\/p>\n Australia deserve credit for their control, particularly Boland. Yet we have still seen only one side bat. Until the Proteas have had their opportunity with the ball, there is a substantial part of this contest left to discover.<\/p>\n For now, PE has given us two days of interrupted cricket, anxious watching and a few reminders of why Test matches hold our attention so tightly. There has been frustration, certainly.
