First Test | South Africa vs Australia | Kingsmead, Durban | 10–12 October 2026

There is something special about Test cricket between South Africa and Australia. Two proud cricketing nations, neither prepared to give an inch, and a contest where fortunes can change in the space of a single session.

Unfortunately for the Proteas, the last three days at Kingsmead have belonged largely to the Australians.

South Africa have shown moments of determination, but Australia have been more disciplined, more patient and, importantly, have made their opportunities count.

As we head into the final day, the Proteas have a mountain to climb.

Australia resumed their first innings on 187/6, and South Africa would have been quietly confident of wrapping things up without too much damage.

But Test cricket has a habit of punishing teams that cannot finish the job.

Matt Renshaw produced a magnificent innings of 190, displaying patience, concentration and the ability to punish anything loose.

What really hurt South Africa was Australia’s lower-order resistance. Renshaw and Nathan Lyon put together a remarkable ninth-wicket partnership of 134 runs, helping Australia reach 390.From a South African perspective, that was frustrating. When you have the opposition six wickets down, you simply cannot allow them to recover to that extent.

The Proteas then had to face Australia’s quality bowling attack late in the day.

Josh Hazlewood struck early, removing Ryan Rickelton without scoring, and South Africa finished on 27/1.

Australia had taken control, and the Proteas were already playing catch-up.

Day three was an opportunity for South Africa to fight their way back into the contest.

There were encouraging periods with the bat, but the Australian attack was relentless.

Pat Cummins led from the front, supported by Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. They bowled with discipline, asked questions consistently and made scoring runs difficult.

South Africa eventually reached 284, conceding a first-innings deficit of 106 runs.

It wasn’t a complete batting disaster, but against Australia, giving away a lead of more than 100 runs is dangerous.

Steve Smith also reminded everyone of his remarkable ability in the slips, taking four catches during the innings.Australia then began their second innings positively, moving to 33 without loss before poor light brought proceedings to an early conclusion.

By stumps, their advantage had grown to 139 runs.

The worrying thing for South Africa was that Australia looked comfortable controlling the tempo of the match.

If South Africa hoped for an Australian batting collapse on the fourth morning, those hopes quickly faded.

The visitors came out with a clear intention: score quickly, build an imposing lead and give their bowlers enough time to dismiss the Proteas.

Renshaw continued his excellent match with another 82 runs, while Nic Maddinson contributed an aggressive 48.

Pat Cummins added a blistering 32 from just 12 deliveries as Australia declared on 314/6.That left South Africa needing an enormous 421 runs to win.

Let’s be realistic. Chasing 421 against this Australian bowling attack was always going to be a massive challenge.

The Proteas needed a strong opening partnership, plenty of patience and, above all, wickets in hand.Instead, Australia once again made early inroads.

David Bedingham contributed a fighting 46, while Aiden Markram showed determination to remain unbeaten on 45.But the wickets kept falling.

Even Renshaw joined the wicket-taking party, claiming his first Test wicket when he dismissed Proteas captain Temba Bavuma.

South Africa finished the day on 102/4, still requiring another 319 runs.

With six wickets remaining, the task facing the home side is enormous.

For me, the biggest disappointment has been South Africa’s inability to maintain pressure for long enough.

There have been good spells of bowling and periods where the batsmen have looked comfortable, but Test cricket is about putting those performances together over five days.Australia have done that better.

Allowing Renshaw and the lower order to rescue Australia’s first innings was a major turning point. Then, with the bat, South Africa failed to build the substantial partnerships needed to take control.

You cannot afford those mistakes against a team containing Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon. They are simply too experienced and too good at exploiting weaknesses.

Cricket is a wonderful game because nothing is guaranteed until the final wicket falls.Aiden Markram is still there, and South Africa will be hoping he can produce something special.

But the realistic objective now may be survival rather than victory. The Proteas need to bat with discipline, leave the deliveries they don’t need to play and make Australia work for every wicket.

The longer they remain at the crease, the more pressure they can put back on the visitors. It will take an extraordinary effort.

Australia deserve credit for the way they have approached this Test match.Renshaw has been outstanding, their bowlers have been disciplined and their captain has made positive decisions.

For South Africa, there are lessons to be learned.Playing Australia requires more than occasional brilliance. It demands consistency, mental toughness and the ability to take your chances when they arrive.

The Proteas have the talent to compete, but talent alone doesn’t win Test matches. As we head into Day 5, the Australians are firmly in the driving seat.

The question now is whether South Africa can show the fighting spirit that Proteas supporters expect.

One thing is certain: the Proteas will need to dig deep, because Australia won’t be handing them anything.

Until next time, enjoy your cricket and keep supporting the Proteas!

First Test | South Africa vs Australia | Kingsmead, Durban | 10–12 October 2026 There is something special about Test cricket between South Africa and Australia.
