Forget the laminated menus and suspiciously convenient pizza. The Venice worth tasting begins when you wander away from the obvious.<\/h3>\n

There are cities you visit for the food, and then there is Venice \u2014 a city where dinner somehow becomes part of the scenery.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it is the walk there.<\/p>\n

You cross a tiny bridge, turn into a calle barely wide enough for two people, pass an elderly Venetian carrying groceries home and suddenly find yourself standing outside an unassuming door with absolutely no indication that one of the best meals of your trip is waiting behind it.<\/p>\n

That is Venice.<\/p>\n

The mistake is assuming that because the city is spectacular, everything served within it must be spectacular too. It isn’t. Venice has more than its fair share of restaurants designed for visitors who will never return.<\/p>\n

The sublime version of Venice requires a little more curiosity.<\/p>\n

Look beyond Piazza San Marco. Follow the canals into Castello and Cannaregio. Stop for cicchetti when everyone else is ordering lunch. Take a vaporetto across the lagoon purely because there is something extraordinary waiting at the other end.<\/p>\n

This is where I would eat.<\/p>\n

OSTERIA ALLE TESTIERE<\/h2>\n

The tiny seafood restaurant worth reorganising your Venice itinerary around<\/h3>\n

There are restaurants where you make a reservation.<\/p>\n

Then there are restaurants where you arrange the day around the reservation.<\/p>\n

Osteria alle Testiere<\/a> belongs firmly in the second category.<\/p>\n

Hidden in Castello, this intimate seafood osteria has become one of those addresses serious food lovers quietly exchange before a trip to Venice. It is small, wonderfully focused and deeply connected to what arrives from the sea.<\/p>\n

There is no need for culinary theatre here. The attraction is freshness, simplicity and the understanding that when seafood is exceptional, interfering with it too much would be almost criminal.<\/p>\n

Expect the menu to follow the catch rather than the other way around.<\/p>\n

Come here for seafood. Come hungry. And, most importantly, come with a reservation \u2014 the restaurant currently accepts bookings online rather than by telephone or email.<\/p>\n

Sublime verdict:<\/strong> If I could secure only one classic Venetian seafood reservation in the historic centre, this would be very high on the list.<\/p>\n

ANTICHE CARAMPANE<\/h2>\n

Old Venice, without turning dinner into a museum piece<\/h3>\n

Somewhere near Rialto, away from the most obvious stream of visitors, Venice suddenly feels like Venice again.<\/p>\n

That is the mood surrounding Antiche Carampane<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The restaurant’s cooking is rooted in traditional Venetian recipes but isn’t trapped by them. Seafood naturally dominates, and the kitchen moves comfortably between classics and more contemporary interpretations. The restaurant itself recommends dishes ranging from octopus to cassopipa and traditional fried fish.<\/p>\n

What makes it special, though, is the atmosphere.<\/p>\n

This feels like somewhere you have discovered rather than somewhere that has been presented to you.<\/p>\n

And in Venice, that distinction matters.<\/p>\n

Order with the lagoon in mind:<\/strong> seafood, local preparations and whatever sounds particularly seasonal that day.<\/p>\n

Sublime verdict:<\/strong> The place I would choose when someone says, \u201cI want a proper Venetian dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

AL COVO<\/h2>\n

A Venetian institution for people who care where dinner came from<\/h3>\n

Al Covo is another name worth knowing before you arrive.<\/p>\n

It sits comfortably in that wonderful space between refined restaurant and genuinely warm neighbourhood address. Venetian cooking remains at its heart, with the lagoon providing much of the vocabulary.<\/p>\n

This isn’t food that needs pyrotechnics to justify itself. It is the kind of restaurant that makes you realise how distinctive Venetian cuisine can be once you move beyond the international shorthand of \u201cItalian food.\u201d<\/p>\n

The current Michelin selection places Al Covo among its Venetian restaurants in the city.<\/p>\n

Sublime verdict:<\/strong> Elegant enough for a special dinner, relaxed enough that dinner still feels like dinner.<\/p>\n

CORTE SCONTA<\/h2>\n

For lunch beneath the vines<\/h3>\n

Venice does hidden courtyards exceptionally well.<\/p>\n

Corte Sconta has one of the loveliest.<\/p>\n

The restaurant is tucked into Castello, away from the densest tourist traffic, and its seafood cooking is matched by a wonderfully atmospheric internal courtyard shaded by grapevines.<\/p>\n

Michelin currently highlights it not only for its fish and seafood but as one of Venice’s particularly romantic dining addresses.<\/p>\n

It is difficult to imagine a more Venetian lunch than sitting beneath those vines while plates of seafood slowly accumulate on the table.<\/p>\n

Don’t rush it.<\/p>\n

Venice punishes itineraries built around efficiency.<\/p>\n

Sublime verdict:<\/strong> Long lunch territory. Cancel whatever you planned immediately afterwards.<\/p>\n

GLAM ENRICO BARTOLINI<\/h2>\n

When Venice decides to dress for dinner<\/h3>\n

There is everyday Venice, and there is the Venice of palazzi, candlelight, silk walls and rooms that make you instinctively sit slightly straighter.<\/p>\n

Glam Enrico Bartolini belongs to the latter.<\/p>\n

Located inside Palazzo Venart, GLAM is the splurge restaurant on this list \u2014 the place for the anniversary, the milestone birthday or simply the evening when you’ve decided Venice deserves your best clothes.<\/p>\n

The kitchen is led by Donato Ascani and currently holds two Michelin stars. Michelin’s 2026 Venice seafood selection particularly highlights the restaurant’s imaginative treatment of lagoon fish.<\/p>\n

This isn’t the place for spaghetti and an early night.<\/p>\n

It is an occasion.<\/p>\n

Sublime verdict:<\/strong> Go when dinner itself is the evening’s entertainment.<\/p>\n

QUADRI<\/h2>\n

Because sometimes the famous view really is worth it<\/h3>\n

I usually become suspicious when a restaurant occupies one of the world’s most famous squares.<\/p>\n

Location can become an excuse.<\/p>\n

But Quadri deserves exemption.<\/p>\n

Sitting above the historic caf\u00e9 on Piazza San Marco, Quadri offers the wonderfully decadent possibility of dining right in Venice’s grandest theatrical set while eating contemporary interpretations of Venetian and Italian cuisine.<\/p>\n

Michelin currently lists Quadri among Venice’s starred restaurants and also singles it out as one of the city’s romantic dining experiences.<\/p>\n

Is it subtle?<\/p>\n

Absolutely not.<\/p>\n

But neither is Venice.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you should surrender to the chandeliers.<\/p>\n

Sublime verdict:<\/strong> The glamorous Venice dinner. Dress accordingly.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

THEN LEAVE VENICE FOR LUNCH<\/h1>\n

Not permanently.<\/p>\n

Just get on a boat.<\/p>\n

One of the secrets to eating exceptionally well in Venice is understanding that Venice does not end at the edge of the historic centre.<\/p>\n

The lagoon is part of the story.<\/p>\n

And two of its most compelling food destinations require a vaporetto.<\/p>\n

AL GATTO NERO \u2014 BURANO<\/h2>\n

The lunch I would happily cross the lagoon for<\/h3>\n

Burano’s brightly painted houses might get you onto the island.<\/p>\n

Trattoria al Gatto Nero<\/a> is an excellent reason to stay for lunch.<\/p>\n

The Bovo family has run the restaurant since 1965, building its reputation around seafood, lagoon ingredients and the traditions of Burano. Its cooking follows the seasons and daily catch, with homemade pasta and a menu devoted principally to fish.<\/p>\n

And then there is the risotto.<\/p>\n

The restaurant’s risotto di g\u00f2 alla Buranella<\/strong>, made in the tradition of the island using goby fish from the lagoon, is exactly the sort of dish you should travel for: local, specific and almost impossible to separate from the place where you’re eating it.<\/p>\n

Have lunch beside the canal. Order slowly. Drink something cold.<\/p>\n

Allow Burano to become more than a photograph.<\/p>\n

Sublime verdict:<\/strong> One of my favourite kinds of travel meal \u2014 the restaurant becomes the excuse for the journey.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

VENISSA \u2014 MAZZORBO<\/h2>\n

The extraordinary one<\/h3>\n

Walk across the little wooden bridge from Burano and the mood changes.<\/p>\n

The crowds thin.<\/p>\n

The colours soften.<\/p>\n

And suddenly you are on Mazzorbo.<\/p>\n

Inside a historic walled vineyard sits Venissa<\/a>, one of the lagoon’s most fascinating restaurants.<\/p>\n

Chefs Chiara Pavan and Francesco Brutto describe their approach as cucina ambientale<\/strong> \u2014 cooking shaped by the ecosystem around them. Ingredients include vegetables and herbs from the estate, fish from the lagoon and Upper Adriatic and produce selected with environmental impact firmly in mind.<\/p>\n

The restaurant currently holds both a Michelin star and a Michelin Green Star.<\/p>\n

This is not simply somewhere to eat while visiting Venice.<\/p>\n

It is a completely different way of understanding Venice.<\/p>\n

The lagoon stops being scenery and becomes dinner.<\/p>\n

Sublime verdict:<\/strong> If you love destination restaurants, build half a day around this one.<\/p>\n

\n
\n<\/div>\n

AND THEN THERE ARE CICCHETTI<\/h1>\n

You cannot eat every meal sitting beneath a white tablecloth.<\/p>\n

Nor should you.<\/p>\n

Venice’s greatest edible pleasure might actually be its simplest: walking into a bacaro, pointing at several cicchetti behind the counter and ordering a small glass of wine.<\/p>\n

Then doing it again somewhere else.<\/p>\n

And again.<\/p>\n

Think creamy baccal\u00e0 mantecato piled onto bread. Sardines. Anchovies. Polenta. Tiny sandwiches. Fried seafood. Whatever looked irresistible enough that morning to put behind the glass.<\/p>\n

The important thing is not turning the experience into another checklist.<\/p>\n

The best bacaro crawl is slightly accidental.<\/p>\n

Start around Cannaregio or San Polo. Order one or two things. Have an ombra<\/strong> \u2014 the traditional little glass of wine \u2014 and move on when curiosity takes over.<\/p>\n

You aren’t having dinner.<\/p>\n

You’re wandering.<\/p>\n

There is a difference.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

WHAT I WOULD ACTUALLY DO<\/h1>\n

If I had three delicious days in Venice, I wouldn’t spend them racing between \u201cmust-eat\u201d addresses.<\/p>\n

I would give each day a different personality.<\/p>\n

One evening would belong to Osteria alle Testiere or Antiche Carampane<\/strong> \u2014 seafood, wine and the Venice of narrow streets after dark.<\/p>\n

Another would be deliberately unplanned: cicchetti, an ombra, another bacaro, another bridge, perhaps dinner only if dinner still seemed necessary.<\/p>\n

And then I would dedicate an afternoon to the lagoon.<\/p>\n

Boat to Burano.<\/p>\n

Walk.<\/p>\n

Lunch at Al Gatto Nero<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Or cross to Mazzorbo and make Venissa<\/strong> the destination.<\/p>\n

Because the best meal in Venice isn’t necessarily the one with the grandest dining room or the longest tasting menu.<\/p>\n

It is the meal that could only have happened here.<\/p>\n

Seafood pulled from this lagoon.<\/p>\n

Wine poured in a tiny bacaro.<\/p>\n

Risotto eaten beside a Burano canal.<\/p>\n

A plate arriving while the water outside changes colour with the evening light.<\/p>\n

That is the Venice worth tasting.<\/p>\n

And once you find it, the tourist menus become very easy to walk past.<\/p>\n
