If you’re going to set an alarm ridiculously early while on holiday, there had better be an excellent reason.<\/p>\n

Pick one or two experiences, leave enough time for lunch and resist transforming your weekend escape into an endurance event involving twelve attractions and a spreadsheet.<\/p>\n

This is the Magaliesberg. You’re allowed to slow down.<\/p>\n

Not that there is anything particularly wrong with that.<\/p>\n

But combining natural beauty with a little perspective on where we came from makes this part of Gauteng especially interesting.<\/p>\n

Nobody drove all the way into the countryside to behave sensibly around dessert.<\/p>\n

Yes, you can visit the Magaliesberg for the day.<\/p>\n

But the region becomes particularly lovely once the day-trippers begin heading home.<\/p>\n

Stay over and suddenly there is no rush to finish lunch. Sunset becomes an event. Dinner can stretch into the evening, and the next morning starts with birds rather than an alarm announcing another commute.<\/p>\n

Accommodation ranges from camping and self-catering hideaways to romantic cottages, country lodges and luxurious hotels. For couples, a secluded cottage and a bottle of something nice may be all the itinerary you need.<\/p>\n

For families, look for properties with pools, trails and enough activities to keep everyone entertained.<\/p>\n

And for a solo escape?<\/p>\n

A book, a view and a switched-off laptop can be surprisingly restorative company.<\/p>\n

This may, in fact, be one of the best things to do in the Magaliesberg.<\/p>\n

Drink coffee outside.Watch the mountains change colour as the light moves across them.<\/p>\n

And perhaps that is what makes the Magaliesberg such an appealing escape.<\/p>\n

The magic of the Magaliesberg isn’t one spectacular attraction.<\/p>\n

It’s the combination.<\/p>\n

Ancient mountains and modern country retreats. Hiking boots and spa robes. Sunrise balloon flights and lazy breakfasts. Adventure when you want it and complete inactivity when you don’t. You can arrive looking for adrenaline, romance, family time, good food or simply somewhere quiet enough to hear yourself think.<\/p>\n

And somehow, the Magaliesberg accommodates all of it.<\/p>\n

Perhaps that’s why we keep returning.<\/p>\n

Not because it demands to be seen once, photographed and crossed off a list.<\/p>\n

But because it offers something increasingly precious: space to slow down.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And sometimes the most sublime escape isn’t the one that takes you furthest from home.<\/p>\n

It’s the one that makes you forget how close home actually is.<\/p>\n
