And then there is Old Trafford<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Even if you’ve watched Manchester United play hundreds of times on television, nothing quite prepares you for seeing the stadium in real life for the first time.<\/p>\n The red signs.<\/p>\n The statues.<\/p>\n The crowds spilling out of the surrounding pubs.<\/p>\n Scarves everywhere.<\/p>\n And then that first glimpse of the pitch when you finally walk through into the stands.<\/p>\n Whether you’re travelling to Manchester for a match or simply making the pilgrimage to the Theatre of Dreams, your first visit to Old Trafford is one you’ll remember.<\/p>\n But there are a few things worth knowing before you arrive.<\/p>\n From getting there and choosing where to sit to stadium tours, what you can take inside and how early you really need to arrive, here’s my Old Trafford guide for first-time visitors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Old Trafford is in Greater Manchester, a few kilometres southwest of Manchester city centre.<\/p>\n And Trafford.<\/p>\n On matchdays, you probably won’t even need Google Maps for the final part.<\/p>\n Follow the sea of red shirts.<\/p>\n There are also buses connecting central Manchester with the Old Trafford area.<\/p>\n Give yourself considerably more time than the journey appears to require on your phone, particularly before a big match.<\/p>\n Traffic has absolutely no interest in your kick-off time.<\/p>\n A taxi or ride-hailing service works well earlier in the day.<\/p>\n Closer to kick-off, road closures and congestion can mean you’ll be dropped some distance from the stadium anyway.<\/p>\n After the match, walking away from Old Trafford before trying to order a ride is usually far less stressful than standing outside with thousands of other people all staring hopefully at their phones.<\/p>\n Early.<\/p>\n Earlier than you think.<\/p>\n For a first visit, I wouldn’t treat Old Trafford as somewhere you arrive 20 minutes before kick-off.<\/p>\n The build-up is part of the experience.<\/p>\n Give yourself time to walk around the stadium, see the statues, browse the Megastore, take photographs and soak up the atmosphere.<\/p>\n Then get through security and find your seat without sprinting along a concourse while everyone else is already singing.<\/p>\n For your first match, I’d aim to be in the Old Trafford area at least two hours before kick-off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n You’ll be surprised how quickly that time disappears.<\/p>\n Don’t arrive and immediately head for your turnstile.<\/p>\n Walk around Old Trafford first.<\/p>\n There’s history everywhere.<\/p>\n One of the essential stops is the United Trinity statue<\/strong> featuring George Best, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton.<\/p>\n Then there’s the Sir Matt Busby statue<\/strong>, another important part of the Old Trafford experience.<\/p>\n You’ll also find the Munich Tunnel and memorials commemorating the Munich Air Disaster and those who lost their lives.<\/p>\n Even if you’ve read about Manchester United’s history before, standing there feels different.<\/p>\n Give it time.<\/p>\n You will tell yourself you’re just going to look.<\/p>\n Good luck with that.<\/p>\n The Megastore at Old Trafford is enormous and packed with Manchester United shirts, training gear, scarves, gifts, memorabilia and just about everything else somebody could possibly put a United badge on.<\/p>\n If you’re travelling internationally, this is also an obvious place to buy your Old Trafford souvenir.<\/p>\n A word of warning: it becomes extremely busy on matchdays.<\/p>\n If shopping is high on your list, arrive early rather than attempting to squeeze it into the final few minutes before kick-off.<\/p>\n And remember you’ll still have to carry whatever you buy.<\/p>\n That giant Manchester United souvenir suddenly feels less essential when you’re holding it for the next six hours.<\/p>\n There isn’t one perfect answer.<\/p>\n It depends on the experience you want.<\/p>\n If atmosphere is your priority, where you sit will feel very different from choosing a seat because you want the clearest possible tactical view of the match.<\/p>\n Seats higher up can give you an excellent perspective of the entire pitch.<\/p>\n Closer seats put you nearer to the players and action but can make it harder to see how everything is developing across the field.<\/p>\n For your first visit, I wouldn’t obsess too much about finding the supposedly perfect seat.<\/p>\n You’re at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n Take that in first.<\/p>\n This deserves its own section.<\/p>\n You’ve seen it on television.<\/p>\n You’ve watched goals scored there.<\/p>\n You’ve seen trophy celebrations, derby matches, Champions League nights and more football drama than anyone can reasonably remember.<\/p>\n But walking through the concourse and seeing that pitch appear in front of you for the first time is something else entirely.<\/p>\n Don’t immediately take your phone out.<\/p>\n Look first.<\/p>\n Then take the photo.<\/p>\n It depends on the match.<\/p>\n A major Premier League fixture or European night can feel completely different from an early cup game.<\/p>\n Where you’re sitting also makes a difference.<\/p>\n But when Old Trafford gets going, you’ll know about it.<\/p>\n If you’re unfamiliar with the songs, you’ll probably recognise several by the end of the afternoon.<\/p>\n And no, you don’t need to know every chant before attending your first game.<\/p>\n Nobody is handing out an exam at the turnstile.<\/p>\n Join in when you can.<\/p>\n Enjoy the rest.<\/p>\n This is something you absolutely want to check before leaving your hotel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Old Trafford has strict matchday security rules.<\/p>\n At the time of writing, bags larger than 20 cm x 15 cm x 5 cm<\/strong> aren’t permitted onto the stadium footprint unless an exemption applies.<\/p>\n That’s small.<\/p>\n Much smaller than an ordinary backpack.<\/p>\n If you arrive with a larger bag, you’ll need to use one of the designated bag-drop facilities, which means additional time and expense.<\/p>\n My solution?<\/p>\n Take as little as possible.<\/p>\n Phone.<\/p>\n Wallet.<\/p>\n Ticket.<\/p>\n Small power bank if permitted under the current rules.<\/p>\n A warm layer if necessary.<\/p>\n Done.<\/p>\n And always check Manchester United’s latest stadium regulations before attending because security policies can change.<\/p>\n You don’t have to wear a Manchester United shirt.<\/p>\n But if you’ve bought one specifically for the trip, this is obviously the moment.<\/p>\n More importantly, dress for Manchester weather.<\/p>\n The weather can change its mind with impressive speed.<\/p>\n Layers are your friend.<\/p>\n A waterproof jacket is far more useful than an umbrella when you’re surrounded by thousands of people.<\/p>\n And wear comfortable shoes.<\/p>\n You’ll probably walk much more than expected.<\/p>\n Ticketing arrangements can change, so follow the instructions supplied with your ticket rather than relying on something you read in an old travel article.<\/p>\n Most importantly, sort everything out before arriving at the turnstile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Make sure your phone is charged.<\/p>\n Make sure you know where your ticket is.<\/p>\n Know which entrance you need.<\/p>\n And if you’re travelling with other people, don’t have all the important information sitting on the phone belonging to the one person whose battery is at 4%.<\/p>\n This is also not the day to discover your ancient power bank stopped working sometime in 2022.<\/p>\n This is one area where I wouldn’t take chances.<\/p>\n For official match tickets and hospitality, start with Manchester United’s authorised ticketing channels.<\/p>\n Be particularly careful with unofficial sellers and social-media offers.<\/p>\n A cheap ticket isn’t cheap when it doesn’t get you into the stadium.<\/p>\n If you’re travelling from South Africa or elsewhere specifically to watch Manchester United, build your trip around confirmed arrangements rather than assuming you’ll simply find a ticket when you arrive.<\/p>\n Yes.<\/p>\n Especially if you’re travelling all that way.<\/p>\n The Old Trafford Museum & Stadium Tour lets you see parts of the stadium you wouldn’t normally experience as a match-going supporter.<\/p>\n The standard tour route can include the dressing room, players’ tunnel, dugouts, pitchside areas, stands and press\/media areas.<\/p>\n And walking down the players’ tunnel is one of those shamelessly touristy experiences that you should absolutely embrace.<\/p>\n Pretend you’re walking out for United.<\/p>\n Nobody needs to know.<\/p>\n The guided stadium portion takes roughly 70 minutes, and you’ll want additional time for the museum.<\/p>\n One important detail: standard stadium tours don’t operate on Manchester United home matchdays<\/strong>, so don’t plan to do the tour on the morning of your match.<\/p>\n If you’re in Manchester for a game, book the tour for another day.<\/p>\n The museum is much more interesting when you aren’t racing through it.<\/p>\n Manchester United has an extraordinary amount of history, and the museum covers everything from the club’s beginnings as Newton Heath to legendary players, managers, kits and trophies.<\/p>\n There is also material dealing with the Munich Air Disaster, an essential and deeply moving part of the club’s history.<\/p>\n Allow at least an hour for the museum.<\/p>\n Serious United supporters could easily spend longer.<\/p>\n Absolutely.<\/p>\n If tickets aren’t available during your trip, the stadium tour and museum still make Old Trafford worth visiting.<\/p>\n In some ways, you’ll actually see more of the stadium on a tour than you would on matchday.<\/p>\n You can also visit the Megastore and explore the exterior of the stadium.<\/p>\n So don’t abandon an Old Trafford visit simply because Manchester United isn’t playing while you’re in Manchester.<\/p>\n You won’t struggle to find somewhere selling food on matchday.<\/p>\n There are pubs, caf\u00e9s, takeaways and food vendors around the stadium, with plenty more options back towards Manchester city centre.<\/p>\n Matchday pubs can become extremely busy.<\/p>\n Which is either brilliant or terrible depending on how you feel about being surrounded by hundreds of football supporters singing several hours before kick-off.<\/p>\n If that’s the experience you want, embrace it.<\/p>\n If you’d rather have a quiet meal, eat in central Manchester before heading towards Old Trafford.<\/p>\n Everyone leaves.<\/p>\n At once.<\/p>\n The pavements fill up, tram queues grow and traffic barely moves.<\/p>\n Don’t make elaborate plans that require you to be somewhere on the opposite side of Manchester 30 minutes after the final whistle.<\/p>\n Walk.<\/p>\n Enjoy the atmosphere.<\/p>\n Let some of the crowd disappear.<\/p>\n If United have won, you’ll probably want to hang around anyway.<\/p>\n If they’ve lost…<\/p>\n Well.<\/p>\n Perhaps that’s a good time for a long walk.<\/p>\n A first Old Trafford visit can be magical for young Manchester United supporters.<\/p>\n But plan the day around them rather than trying to fit everything possible into one visit.<\/p>\n Arrive early enough that you’re not rushing.<\/p>\n Know where your entrance is.<\/p>\n Pack lightly.<\/p>\n Dress them properly for the weather.<\/p>\n And take them to the toilet before the match starts.<\/p>\n Every parent reading this already understands why that last piece of advice may be the most important thing in this entire guide.<\/p>\n Manchester United provides accessible facilities for supporters and visitors, including accessible stadium-tour arrangements.<\/p>\n If you have specific mobility or accessibility requirements, contact the club before your visit rather than waiting until you arrive.<\/p>\n The regular stadium-tour route involves a significant number of steps, but alternative arrangements can be made.<\/p>\n Planning ahead will make the day considerably easier.<\/p>\n Before leaving for Old Trafford, make sure you’ve got your match ticket sorted and accessible, your phone fully charged and the correct entrance saved somewhere easy to find.<\/p>\n Check the latest bag and prohibited-item rules, look at the weather forecast and leave the giant backpack at the hotel.<\/p>\n Then arrive early.<\/p>\n Really.<\/p>\n You have travelled all the way to one of the most famous football stadiums in the world.<\/p>\n Don’t spend the entire experience rushing.<\/p>\n If you’re a Manchester United supporter, you already know the answer.<\/p>\n But even if you’re simply interested in football, Old Trafford is one of those stadiums that carries something beyond the match being played that afternoon.<\/p>\n It’s the history.<\/p>\n The names.<\/p>\n The memories.<\/p>\n The statues outside and the tunnel inside.<\/p>\n The anticipation as thousands of supporters make their way towards the ground.<\/p>\n And then there’s that moment when you walk into the stands and see the pitch for the first time.<\/p>\n That’s when it becomes real.<\/p>\n You’re actually at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n My biggest piece of advice for your first visit to Old Trafford is very simple:<\/p>\n Don’t rush
