You start among the busy highways and highveld landscapes of Gauteng, watch the scenery open up as you head through the Free State, climb into the dramatic mountains around Van Reenen, and eventually find yourself descending into the green hills of KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n

And then, finally, there\u2019s that first hint of humid coastal air that tells you Durban isn\u2019t far away.<\/p>\n

Driving from Johannesburg to Durban is one of South Africa\u2019s classic road trips. It\u2019s straightforward enough to do in a day, but there are plenty of reasons not to rush it.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re heading down for a beach holiday, visiting family, escaping Joburg for a long weekend, or simply prefer driving to flying, here\u2019s everything you need to know about the Johannesburg to Durban road trip.<\/p>\n

Johannesburg to Durban Distance<\/h2>\n

The distance from Johannesburg to Durban is roughly 570\u2013600 km<\/strong>, depending on where in Johannesburg you start and where you\u2019re staying in Durban.<\/p>\n

The main route is the N3<\/strong>, which connects Johannesburg and Durban and is by far the simplest option.<\/p>\n

Without long stops, expect the drive to take around 6 to 7 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Realistically, though, I\u2019d allow closer to 7 or 8 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Once you factor in petrol stops, coffee, lunch, bathroom breaks and the inevitable \u201clet\u2019s just stretch our legs for five minutes\u201d stop that somehow turns into half an hour, the journey can easily take most of the day.<\/p>\n

The Best Route From Johannesburg to Durban<\/h2>\n

The easiest route is:<\/p>\n

Johannesburg \u2192 Heidelberg \u2192 Villiers \u2192 Harrismith \u2192 Van Reenen \u2192 Ladysmith \u2192 Mooi River \u2192 Pietermaritzburg \u2192 Durban<\/strong><\/p>\n

For most of the journey, you simply follow the N3 south<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One of the reasons this is such an easy South African road trip is that you don\u2019t need to spend half the journey checking directions. Once you\u2019re on the N3, Durban is well signposted.<\/p>\n

The road is also serviced by plenty of petrol stations and rest stops, so you\u2019re rarely too far from fuel, food or a bathroom.<\/p>\n

That said, this is a major freight route, which means you\u2019ll be sharing the road with plenty of trucks.<\/p>\n

Give yourself time, avoid rushing and be particularly careful when visibility is poor.<\/p>\n

When Is the Best Time to Leave Johannesburg?<\/h2>\n

I\u2019m a big fan of leaving early.<\/p>\n

If you can get on the road at around 5:00 or 6:00 am<\/strong>, you\u2019ll get out of Johannesburg before the day really gets going and have plenty of time for stops along the way.<\/p>\n

It also means you can arrive in Durban during the afternoon rather than navigating an unfamiliar part of the city after dark.<\/p>\n

On long weekends and during school holidays, the N3 can become extremely busy.<\/p>\n

Easter and the December holiday period are particularly notorious.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re travelling at one of these times, I\u2019d leave even more time than you think you need.<\/p>\n

Best Stops Between Johannesburg and Durban<\/h2>\n

You could technically drive straight through with only a quick petrol stop.<\/p>\n

But where\u2019s the fun in that?<\/p>\n

Part of the charm of driving to Durban is stopping along the way, and there are several good places to break up the journey.<\/p>\n

Villiers<\/h3>\n

Villiers is roughly the point where I start thinking seriously about coffee.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s far enough from Johannesburg that you feel like the road trip has properly begun, but you still have a long stretch ahead of you.<\/p>\n

There are service stations along the route where you can refuel, grab something to eat and use the bathrooms.<\/p>\n

If you left Joburg early without breakfast, this is also a sensible first stop.The primary service station in <\/span><\/span>Villiers<\/span><\/span><\/span> along the N3 highway is the <\/span><\/span>Engen Vaal 1 Stop<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/mark>, which consists of two separate facilities on either side of the highway depending on your direction of travel.<\/span> Theres a Wimpy Here and ofcourse sandwiches etc from the Deli<\/p>\n

Harrismith<\/h3>\n

Harrismith is one of the most useful stopping points on the Johannesburg to Durban route.<\/p>\n

By this stage, you\u2019re several hours into the journey, so it\u2019s a good place to refuel both the car and yourself.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll find petrol stations, restaurants and takeaway options, and it makes a natural halfway-ish break before continuing towards Van Reenen.<\/p>\n

If you only plan on making one substantial stop during the trip, Harrismith is a good candidate.<\/p>\n

The <\/span>Bergview One Stop<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/strong> in Harrismith is the ultimate, compulsory road-trip pitstop for travellers driving along the N3 highway between Johannesburg and Durban<\/mark>. Known for its scenic mountain backdrop, modern green amenities, and unique family-friendly farm atmosphere, it is far more than just a typical refuelling station. The Options you have for Food and stocking up here are<\/p>\n

Sugar Man Cafe, Wimpy, The Guinea Fowl, Rocky Mountain Spur, Seattle Coffee,Nandos, Mugg and Bean,Mcdonalds, KUAIA, KFC,Fishaways, Deboanirs, Bits & Biltong.<\/p>\n

Theres also the famous Halaal Wrap It Up Cafe.Features a cozy seating area, adjacent coffee and biltong shop (@biltongandbits<\/code>), and an on-site jamaat khana<\/em> (prayer room).<\/p>\n

For me, this is where the drive gets really beautiful.Van Reenen’s Pass takes you through the Drakensberg escarpment as you cross into KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n

The landscape changes dramatically, and on a clear day there are some gorgeous mountain views.<\/p>\n

But this is also a section where you want to pay attention.There can be heavy truck traffic, and conditions can change quickly. Mist and rain can make visibility difficult, particularly in winter or bad weather.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t let the scenery distract you from the road.<\/p>\n

The Little Church at Van Reenen<\/h2>\n

If you have a little extra time, Van Reenen is worth more than simply driving through.<\/p>\n

One of its most distinctive landmarks is the tiny Llandaff Oratory<\/strong>, often described as one of the smallest churches in the world.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a wonderfully quirky little road-trip stop and exactly the sort of place that makes travelling by car more interesting than simply getting on a plane.<\/p>\n

Even a short stop gives you a chance to stretch your legs before continuing down into KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n

The Midlands<\/h2>\n

Once you\u2019re further into KZN, you\u2019ll start reaching the Midlands.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not in a hurry, this is where I\u2019d seriously consider turning the drive into part of the holiday.<\/p>\n

The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands<\/strong> is full of caf\u00e9s, farm stalls, restaurants, craft shops and beautiful countryside.<\/p>\n

Nottingham Road and the surrounding Midlands Meander area require a little more time than a quick motorway petrol stop, but they\u2019re worth considering if you want a proper lunch or an overnight break.<\/p>\n
