The coffee.<\/p>\n
And I’m not talking about grabbing something from the nearest petrol station on your way to the beach.<\/p>\n
Durban has a surprisingly good specialty coffee scene, with independent roasters, tiny neighbourhood caf\u00e9s, beautiful breakfast spots and a few places that serious coffee people will happily drive across town to visit.<\/p>\n
The best part?<\/p>\n
Coffee in Durban feels very Durban.<\/p>\n
It’s relaxed.<\/p>\n
Nobody seems to be in too much of a hurry.<\/p>\n
And there’s a good chance breakfast will somehow turn into lunch.<\/p>\n
So, if you’re looking for some of the best and most popular coffee spots in Durban, here are a few I’d put on the list.<\/p>\n
If you’re serious about coffee, start with Humble.<\/p>\n
Humble Coffee has become one of the standout names on Durban’s specialty coffee scene, and this isn’t simply somewhere that happens to serve decent coffee alongside breakfast.<\/p>\n
They roast coffee too.<\/p>\n
That means you can sit down for a flat white, try something different and leave with a bag of freshly roasted beans for home.<\/p>\n
The atmosphere is relaxed and very Durban, making it equally good for a morning coffee, breakfast or sitting down with your laptop for a while.<\/p>\n

and coffee enthusiasts Some coffee shops just feel like somewhere you could stay all morning.<\/p>\n Boston Brew is one of them.<\/p>\n Set in a heritage house in Morningside, the caf\u00e9 has a completely different feel from a shopping-centre coffee shop.<\/p>\n There’s coffee.<\/p>\n There’s breakfast.<\/p>\n There’s a balcony.<\/p>\n And suddenly the quick catch-up you planned has been going on for two hours.<\/p>\n Boston Brew uses specialty coffee from KZN’s Manna Roastery, and there’s a small food menu along with cakes and pastries.<\/p>\n Basically, everything required for a successful morning.<\/p>\n Good for:<\/strong> Coffee dates, breakfast and catching up with friends If you like finding the older names behind a city’s coffee culture, Bean Green belongs on the list.<\/p>\n This isn’t about creating the most Instagrammable caf\u00e9 in Durban.<\/p>\n It’s about coffee.<\/p>\n Bean Green has been part of Durban’s independent coffee scene for years and is the sort of place I’d visit when I actually want to talk to someone about what I’m drinking.<\/p>\n It’s relaxed, slightly old-school and refreshingly focused on the important part.<\/p>\n The beans.<\/p>\n Good for:<\/strong> Serious coffee drinkers and locally roasted beans Sometimes coffee needs a pastry.<\/p>\n Actually, let’s be realistic.<\/p>\n Most of the time coffee needs a pastry.<\/p>\n The Glenwood Bakery is one of Durban’s established artisanal food names, known for its breads, pastries and caf\u00e9 food.<\/p>\n This is where I’d go when breakfast is just as important as what’s in the coffee cup.<\/p>\n Order coffee.<\/p>\n Add something freshly baked.<\/p>\n Tell yourself you’ll only have one thing.<\/p>\n See how that goes.<\/p>\n Good for:<\/strong> Coffee, breakfast and freshly baked bread There are coffee shops you visit because you’re in a hurry.<\/p>\n And then there are coffee shops where the setting practically tells you to slow down.<\/p>\n Antique Cafe falls into the second category.<\/p>\n The leafy surroundings and relaxed atmosphere make it a lovely choice for breakfast, brunch or a long coffee with someone you haven’t Good for:<\/strong> Brunch, coffee dates and slower mornings If you’re willing to head towards the Upper Highway, there are some excellent coffee spots waiting for you.<\/p>\n Crane Flower Coffee in Kloof is one of the more interesting ones.<\/p>\n What started in a converted garage has grown into a charming little coffee destination with its own roastery.<\/p>\n There’s something I love about coffee shops like this.<\/p>\n They’re small.<\/p>\n They’re personal.<\/p>\n And you get the feeling the people behind the counter actually care about what’s going into the cup.<\/p>\n Crane Flower also experiments with more unusual drinks, so this is somewhere I’d go when I feel like trying something different.<\/p>\n Good for:<\/strong> Independent coffee, hidden gems and coffee dates If you’re the person in your group who knows the difference between washed and natural coffee, you’re probably going to enjoy Lineage.<\/p>\n Lineage has deep roots in KwaZulu-Natal’s specialty coffee scene and combines a caf\u00e9, roastery and coffee education under one roof.<\/p>\n This is somewhere you can simply order a flat white and enjoy it.<\/p>\n But it’s also somewhere you can start asking questions.<\/p>\n Where are the beans from?<\/p>\n How were they processed?<\/p>\n What’s good on filter?<\/p>\n And then twenty minutes later you’re discussing extraction with somebody and wondering when you became this person.<\/p>\n Coffee does that.<\/p>\n Good for:<\/strong> Serious coffee lovers and learning more about coffee Not every coffee stop needs to become a lesson in coffee processing.<\/p>\n Sometimes you want a beautiful caf\u00e9, good coffee and something nice to eat.<\/p>\n Cafe Mayfair is a popular Durban North option that works particularly well for breakfast, brunch and catching up with friends.<\/p>\n This is the kind of place I’d save for a weekend morning when nobody needs to be anywhere urgently.<\/p>\n Order breakfast.<\/p>\n Have the coffee.<\/p>\n Then order another coffee because apparently you’re staying.<\/p>\n Good for:<\/strong> Brunch, coffee dates and relaxed mornings You can’t write a Durban coffee guide and completely ignore the beach.<\/p>\n That would just be wrong.<\/p>\n Surf Riders gives you the kind of caf\u00e9 experience that reminds you exactly which city you’re in.<\/p>\n You’re near the ocean.<\/p>\n The atmosphere is casual.<\/p>\n And your coffee can very easily become part of a morning at the beach.<\/p>\n This isn’t where I’d necessarily send someone looking to analyse the tasting notes of a rare single-origin coffee.<\/p>\n I’d send them here because sometimes the best cup of coffee is the one you’re drinking near the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n Good for:<\/strong> Beach mornings, breakfast and Durban atmosphere Durban’s coffee scene is fairly spread out.<\/p>\n Morningside and Windermere<\/strong> are particularly useful if you want several caf\u00e9 options relatively close together.<\/p>\n Humble Coffee and Boston Brew are both around this part of town, while Florida Road and the surrounding streets have plenty of additional caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n Head north and Durban North<\/strong> has Colombo, Cafe Mayfair and several newer specialty coffee options.<\/p>\n Then there’s Glenwood<\/strong>, where you’ll find established Durban coffee names and bakery caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n And if you’re willing to drive?<\/p>\n The Upper Highway<\/strong> opens up another entire coffee scene around Kloof and Hillcrest.<\/p>\n Basically, you’re going to need more than one morning.<\/p>\n If coffee is the actual reason you’re leaving the house, I’d start with Humble Coffee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Then visit Colombo Coffee & Tea<\/strong> and Bean Green<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If you’re happy to drive towards Hillcrest, add Lineage Coffee<\/strong> to the list.<\/p>\n And Crane Flower in Kloof is another one worth exploring.<\/p>\n These are the places where I’d ask questions rather than automatically ordering my usual drink.<\/p>\n Find out what’s freshly roasted.<\/p>\n Ask what’s on filter.<\/p>\n Try something you’ve never ordered before.<\/p>\n Worst case?<\/p>\n You discover you’re still a cappuccino person.<\/p>\n There are worse things to be.<\/p>\n Durban understands brunch.<\/p>\n Probably because the weather makes sitting around outside Ngoyi Road.<\/p>\n You could easily turn this into a morning coffee crawl.<\/p>\n Just remember the word morning<\/em>.<\/p>\n If you’re still drinking espresso at 5pm, that’s between you and your sleep schedule.<\/p>\n Durban North has quietly become one of the city’s most useful areas for coffee lovers.<\/p>\n Colombo Coffee & Tea<\/strong> is an obvious stop if you’re interested in locally roasted coffee.<\/p>\n Cafe Mayfair<\/strong> works brilliantly when brunch is part of the plan.<\/p>\n And the surrounding area has several newer independent caf\u00e9s and roasters worth keeping an eye on.<\/p>\n This is also one of the better parts of Durban to buy beans to take home.<\/p>\n Glenwood has been part of Durban’s independent food and coffee culture for years.<\/p>\n Bean Green Coffee Roastery<\/strong> is one of the established names.<\/p>\n The Glenwood Bakery<\/strong> is the obvious choice when coffee needs to be accompanied by bread, breakfast or something sweet.<\/p>\n Glenwood is the kind of neighbourhood where I’d rather explore an independent caf\u00e9 than automatically head to the nearest chain.<\/p>\n If you’re staying in Durban for a few days, don’t assume all the interesting coffee is close to the beachfront.<\/p>\n Head towards the Upper Highway.<\/p>\n Crane Flower Coffee in Kloof<\/strong> and Lineage Coffee in Hillcrest<\/strong> are both worth the drive.<\/p>\n The atmosphere changes too.<\/p>\n Things become greener.<\/p>\n Slower.<\/p>\n More relaxed.<\/p>\n Which makes this a particularly good option for a lazy weekend coffee run.<\/p>\n Sometimes you’re not looking for a coffee roastery.<\/p>\n You just want a cappuccino near the ocean.<\/p>\n And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.<\/p>\n Surf Riders Cafe<\/strong> is one option for combining coffee, breakfast and the beachfront.<\/p>\n You’ll also find caf\u00e9s along North Beach and the Golden Mile.<\/p>\n Grab a coffee.<\/p>\n Walk along the promenade.<\/p>\n Watch the surfers.<\/p>\n Then start thinking about where you’re going for bunny chow later.<\/p>\n That’s a very Durban day.<\/p>\n If you want to take Durban coffee home with you, start with the city’s actual roasters.<\/p>\n Humble Coffee, Colombo, Bean Green and Lineage<\/strong> are all worth investigating.<\/p>\n There are also smaller roasting operations around Durban North and the wider KZN region.<\/p>\n Ask what’s been roasted recently.<\/p>\n Tell them how you make coffee at home.<\/p>\n And buy an amount you’ll actually use while it’s still fresh.<\/p>\n There is no point buying beautiful specialty beans and then leaving them forgotten at the back of the cupboard for six months.<\/p>\n Drink the good coffee.<\/p>\n That’s what it’s there for.<\/p>\n Whatever you actually fifteen coffee shops into one trendy city block.<\/p>\n You have to explore.<\/p>\n One morning you’re having specialty coffee in Windermere.<\/p>\n The next you’re buying beans in Durban North.<\/p>\n Then somebody tells you about a little coffee shop in Kloof and suddenly you’re heading up the highway on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n But that’s the fun of it.<\/p>\n Find the neighbourhood spots.<\/p>\n Support the independent roasters.<\/p>\n Order breakfast.<\/p>\n Try something new.<\/p>\n And every now and then, forget about tasting notes completely and drink a cappuccino near the
