There are defeats that hurt. Then there are derby defeats.<\/p>\n

And then there is losing 1\u20130 at Old Trafford to Manchester City after they played more than an hour with ten men. That is the kind of result that leaves you sitting in silence long after the final whistle wondering how on earth United managed to walk away with nothing.<\/p>\n

This wasn’t a demolition. It wasn’t City blowing us away with beautiful football.<\/p>\n

It was actually worse in many ways.Because the opportunity was there.<\/p>\n

The red card was there.Old Trafford was waiting. Yet somehow, the afternoon ended with Erling Haaland celebrating in front of the travelling fans while United were left arguing about one of the biggest VAR moments we’ve seen in a Manchester derby.<\/p>\n

Phil Foden was sent off in the first half following a controversial incident involving Bruno Fernandes, leaving City with ten players for the majority of the match.<\/p>\n

At that moment, every United supporter inside Old Trafford probably thought exactly the same thing:<\/p>\n

This is our chance.You could feel the stadium lift. The crowd became louder. Every attack was greeted with belief because surely a side with an extra man, playing at home in a derby, should take control. <\/cite><\/p>\n

But football has a cruel habit of punishing teams that fail to take advantage of momentum.<\/p>\n

United had territory.United had possession.What United didn’t have was the killer instinct.<\/p>\n

United created moments\u2026 but moments don’t win derbies
\nThis is probably the most frustrating part of the afternoon. United weren’t completely outplayed.<\/p>\n

There were chances.<\/p>\n

There were dangerous breaks.<\/p>\n

There were moments where one better pass, one calmer finish or one more ruthless decision could have changed everything.<\/p>\n

Instead, City defended with incredible discipline and Gianluigi Donnarumma produced the kind of saves you’d expect from a world-class goalkeeper when the pressure started building. United kept knocking, but the door never opened. <\/cite><\/p>\n

That’s what elite teams do.Even with ten men, they stay organised.<\/p>\n

They suffer.They wait.And when one opportunity arrives\u2026 they take it.<\/p>\n

The VAR decision that will dominate every conversation.The winning goal will be talked about far longer than the football itself.<\/p>\n

When Haaland finished City’s move, the goal was initially ruled out before VAR overturned the decision and awarded it.Cue absolute chaos.United players protested.<\/p>\n

Old Trafford erupted in disbelief.Replays immediately became the centre of attention, with the positioning of Enzo Fern\u00e1ndez becoming the key talking point in the offside phase. Later, the refereeing body acknowledged that the VAR process had made an error and said the incident should have resulted in an on-field review instead. <\/cite><\/p>\n

Now here’s where I stand as a United fan.Yes, the decision matters.<\/p>\n

Yes, it changed the match.And yes, we’ve got every right to feel furious about it.<\/p>\n

But I also can’t ignore the uncomfortable truth…We still had over an hour against ten men.<\/p>\n

VAR may have decided the goal.It didn’t decide every missed opportunity before and after it.<\/p>\n

Haaland does what Haaland always does<\/strong>
\nOne chance.One finish.One goal.That’s the difference.<\/p>\n

Haaland has built his reputation on punishing teams in decisive moments and he did it again. He didn’t need five opportunities. He didn’t need City to dominate possession.<\/p>\n

He simply arrived when it mattered and buried the chance.That is why elite strikers win big matches. <\/cite><\/p>\n

What disappointed me most about United
\nFor me, this isn’t about effort.<\/p>\n

I don’t think the players stopped trying. It’s about composure.<\/p>\n

When you’re handed a numerical advantage in a Manchester derby, patience becomes just as important as passion. Too many attacks felt rushed. Too many promising positions ended without the final quality needed to break City down.<\/p>\n

Michael Carrick spoke afterwards about needing to move forward quickly, and that’s exactly what United have to do because dwelling on this one won’t change the points column. <\/cite><\/p>\n

\nAs much as i hate him Bruno Fernandes Kept fighting.Tried to drag United forward and was involved in almost everything positive. You could see the frustration written all over him by the end.<\/p>\n

Donnarumma. City’s match winner<\/p>\n

Sometimes goalkeepers steal headlines without scoring. His big saves gave City the platform to survive relentless pressure.<\/p>\n

Erling Haaland.Decisive again.Didn’t need a spectacular performance. He needed one defining moment and delivered exactly that.<\/p>\n

Final thoughts<\/p>\n

This one will sting.Not because City were brilliant.<\/p>\n

Not because United were embarrassed.But because the game was sitting there waiting to be won.<\/p>\n

Playing against ten men for so long should have been the advantage that defined the derby. Instead, a controversial VAR decision, a clinical Haaland finish and United’s inability to convert pressure into goals combined to produce one of the most frustrating afternoons Old Trafford has seen in a long time. <\/cite><\/p>\n

The debate around VAR will continue all week.And it should.<\/p>\n

But once the anger settles, United also have to look inward.Big teams don’t just create pressure.<\/p>\n

They turn pressure into goals.Today, Manchester City found a way with ten men.<\/p>\n

Manchester United didn’t with eleven.<\/p>\n
