\nBaltimore was supposed to be neutral territory. It didn’t feel neutral.<\/p>\n
And by the end, it certainly didn’t look neutral.The Springboks arrived in America with a series to finish, an old rival standing in their way and an opportunity to demonstrate that South African rugby’s golden age is nowhere near finished.<\/p>\n
They left with all three boxes ticked.<\/p>\n
Springboks 43. All Blacks 28.<\/strong><\/p>\n Six tries. A 3\u20131 series victory. A third consecutive Test win over New Zealand.And another emphatic entry in rugby’s greatest rivalry.This wasn’t simply South Africa overpowering New Zealand.<\/p>\n We’ve seen that movie before.What happened in Baltimore was considerably more interesting.<\/p>\n The Springboks showed they can hurt you in almost every possible way.<\/p>\n Welcome to America.There was something surreal about it.<\/p>\n Green and gold. Black jerseys. Hakas. Shosholoza.And the home of the Baltimore Ravens.<\/p>\n M&T Bank Stadium provided the unlikely setting for the fourth and final Test of the Greatest Rivalry series, taking the Springboks-All Blacks rivalry to the United States for the first time.<\/p>\n Then 68,173 people turned up.For rugby in America, this was no exhibition.<\/p>\n It mattered.For New Zealand, victory would square the series.<\/p>\n For South Africa, victory would settle it.The Boks settled it.<\/p>\n New Zealand Came to Play.Don’t let the final score fool you.The All Blacks had moments when they looked extremely dangerous.<\/p>\n Codie Taylor struck first for New Zealand, finishing a rapid attacking sequence that briefly exposed South Africa’s defensive structure.Then came something even better.<\/p>\n Late in the first half, New Zealand constructed a remarkable 32-phase attack, patiently stretching and probing the Springbok defence before Will Jordan finished it.Suddenly it was 17\u201314.<\/p>\n Game very much on.That was the beauty of this Test.<\/p>\n New Zealand didn’t come to Baltimore merely hoping to survive South Africa’s physicality.They wanted to play.The problem was that South Africa wanted to play too.<\/p>\n These Aren’t Your Father’s Springboks.This is where things get scary.<\/p>\n Everyone knows the traditional Springbok formula.<\/p>\n Scrum.Maul.Collision.Penalty.<\/p>\n Repeat until the opposition begins reconsidering its career choices.Those weapons remain.<\/p>\n But this version of South Africa is becoming something else.<\/p>\n Damian de Allende scored from close range. Morn\u00e9 van den Berg spotted space and darted through it. Malcolm Marx powered over from a rolling maul. Pieter-Steph du Toit finished another punishing attack.<\/p>\n Different players.Different methods.Same consequence.<\/p>\n South Africa kept finding the tryline.The Springboks scored six tries, with De Allende, Van den Berg, Marx, Du Toit, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Cameron Hanekom all crossing.<\/p>\n Power was still the foundation.But now there was imagination sitting on top of it.<\/p>\n That combination should concern everybody.Morn\u00e9 Van Den Berg Changed the Temperature<\/p>\n There are scrumhalves who manage games.Then there are scrumhalves who make games feel faster.<\/p>\n Morn\u00e9 van den Berg did the latter.<\/p>\n His try was opportunistic, but his influence went considerably deeper. He kept South Africa moving, attacked space around the fringes and repeatedly forced New Zealand to make decisions before they were comfortable making them.He was eventually named Player of the Match.<\/p>\n It was exactly the kind of performance South Africa’s depth keeps producing.Someone gets an opportunity.<\/p>\n Someone takes it.The machine keeps moving.<\/p>\n Then Came Arendse.Every great Test needs one moment you remember after you’ve forgotten the phases, penalties and percentages.<\/p>\n Baltimore got Kurt-Lee Arendse.New Zealand were threatening.<\/p>\n The ball came loose.Arendse collected it and suddenly the entire geometry of the match changed.<\/p>\n He accelerated.He stepped.<\/p>\n He disappeared.Around 50 metres later, he was over.<\/p>\n 36\u201321.That was the moment Baltimore knew.<\/p>\n New Zealand had spent enormous energy fighting their way back into the contest.<\/p>\n Arendse took seconds to rip it away again.Some tries add five points.Others end arguments.<\/p>\n This was the latter.The Bomb Squad Effect Remains Real<\/p>\n South Africa’s greatest advantage might no longer be any individual player.It’s what happens when the replacements arrive.<\/p>\n Most international teams make substitutions hoping not to lose intensity.South Africa make substitutions expecting to increase it.That distinction is enormous.<\/p>\n Against an All Blacks side reaching the end of a gruelling eight-match, six-week tour, fresh Springbok power became increasingly difficult to contain.The spaces became larger.<\/p>\n The collisions became harder.And eventually Cameron Hanekom collected loose ball and crossed for South Africa’s sixth.<\/p>\n 43\u201321.Beauden Barrett’s late try made the scoreboard slightly kinder.<\/p>\n It didn’t change the story.<\/p>\n Siya’s Springboks Keep Evolving.This is perhaps the most significant part.South Africa didn’t win because New Zealand were poor.<\/p>\n The All Blacks scored four tries.They produced passages of beautiful attacking rugby.<\/p>\n They challenged South Africa.And they still conceded 43.That’s what makes this Springbok side so fascinating.<\/p>\n For years, opponents knew what was coming and couldn’t stop it.Now they don’t always know what’s coming.<\/p>\n The Boks can squeeze you through set piece.They can brutalise you around the gain line.They can kick.They can counter.They can go wide.<\/p>\n And when a match opens up, they have athletes such as Arendse capable of turning a loose ball into seven points before the opposition has reorganised.<\/p>\n The Springboks haven’t abandoned their identity.They’ve expanded it.<\/p>\n The All Blacks Question<\/strong><\/p>\n New Zealand leave this series with considerably more to think about.There were flashes of the All Blacks everyone recognises\u2014the speed of handling, support lines and instinctive attacking rugby were all there.<\/p>\n But over four Tests, South Africa found more answers.The Springboks won the series 3\u20131.<\/p>\n More significantly, they won the final three Tests consecutively.That changes the conversation.<\/p>\n This isn’t one narrow victory.It’s a pattern.New Zealand remain capable of hurting South Africa.<\/p>\n The question is whether they can withstand South Africa for 80 minutes when the Springbok bench begins changing the physical equation.<\/p>\n Right now, the answer appears to be no.<\/p>\n Bigger Than Baltimore<\/p>\n The setting mattered too.<\/p>\n America will host the men’s Rugby World Cup in 2031, and bringing arguably international rugby’s most famous rivalry to an NFL stadium was an obvious glimpse of what World Rugby wants the sport to become in the United States.<\/p>\n More than 68,000 people watching South Africa and New Zealand trade tries in Baltimore isn’t a bad advertisement.<\/p>\n American sports fans understand rivalries.They understand physicality.They understand speed.<\/p>\n They understand two teams who genuinely don’t like losing to one another.Give them enough afternoons like this and rugby won’t require much explaining.<\/p>\n The Simply Sublime Verdict<\/strong><\/p>\n The scoreboard says 43\u201328.The series says 3\u20131.<\/p>\n But the bigger message from Baltimore was about evolution.The Springboks have spent years proving they can win ugly.Now they’re increasingly proving they can win beautifully.<\/p>\n They still have the scrum.They still have the maul.They still have the brutality at the breakdown and the bench capable of changing a Test match.<\/p>\n But add Van den Berg’s speed, Arendse’s electricity and a growing willingness to attack from anywhere, and South Africa become something more frightening than merely powerful.<\/p>\n They become unpredictable.Baltimore was meant to take rugby’s greatest rivalry somewhere new.<\/p>\n Instead, it reminded us of something increasingly familiar.<\/p>\n The All Blacks came to America looking to square the series.<\/p>\n The Springboks left America looking like the standard everyone else still has to reach.<\/p>\n
