<\/h1>\n<\/h1>\nAnother football weekend is upon us, and this one has a little bit of everything.<\/p>\n
There is a Manchester derby carrying serious bragging rights in England. Real Madrid and Barcelona have different-looking assignments in Spain. Italy serves up heavyweight names with points to prove, while back home in South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns face away trips that could tell us a little more about the early shape of the Betway Premiership.<\/p>\n
Forget the hype. Once that whistle blows, reputations count for very little.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s what I\u2019m watching this weekend.<\/p>\n
There are plenty of Premier League matches worth keeping an eye on, but come Sunday, attention shifts to Old Trafford.<\/p>\n
Manchester United against Manchester City.<\/p>\n
No matter where these two teams sit on the table, the Manchester derby rarely needs selling. City make the short journey across town looking to continue their momentum, while United have the opportunity to make a statement against their neighbours.<\/p>\n
For United, this is the kind of afternoon where performance alone might not be enough. Derby football is about the result. Nobody remembers how well you moved the ball if the team from across town leaves your stadium with three points.<\/p>\n
City, meanwhile, know exactly how damaging a derby victory can be. Beat United at Old Trafford and you don’t just collect three points \u2014 you send a message.<\/p>\n
Before that, Saturday gives us Liverpool hosting Fulham, Chelsea welcoming Hull City, Tottenham facing Everton and Arsenal travelling to Sunderland. Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest also meet with both searching for their first league victory of the season.<\/p>\n
Sunderland against Arsenal is particularly interesting. On paper, Arsenal should be favourites. Football isn’t played on paper, though, and a Saturday night crowd will want to turn the occasion into something uncomfortable for the visitors.<\/p>\n
Game to watch:<\/strong> Manchester United vs Manchester City Saturday night at the Bernab\u00e9u sees Real Madrid host Rayo Vallecano.<\/p>\n Madrid will be expected to take care of business, but these are exactly the fixtures where patience matters. If the early goal doesn’t arrive, suddenly every misplaced pass gets louder and every Rayo counterattack feels a little more dangerous.<\/p>\n Barcelona have a different challenge on Sunday when they travel to Levante. Again, Bar\u00e7a will enter as the bigger name, but away matches after the international break and early in a long season can become awkward very quickly.<\/p>\n Then there is a fixture I really like: Real Sociedad against Atl\u00e9tico Madrid.<\/p>\n That one has battle written all over it.<\/p>\n Sociedad at home are rarely interested in simply admiring Atl\u00e9tico’s reputation, while Atl\u00e9tico tend to be at their most comfortable when matches become physical, tactical and slightly ugly.<\/p>\n La Liga’s weekend also includes Athletic Club against Elche, Osasuna against Espanyol and Celta Vigo hosting M\u00e1laga.<\/p>\n Game to watch:<\/strong> Real Sociedad vs Atl\u00e9tico Madrid Serie A gives us a fascinating Saturday clash between Lazio and Milan.<\/p>\n This isn’t a match where either side can casually feel their way into proceedings. Lazio at home will want to impose themselves, while Milan know these are precisely the away fixtures that separate title contenders from teams merely hoping to finish near the top.<\/p>\n Then Sunday brings Napoli against Bologna.<\/p>\n Napoli will expect to control the match, but Bologna have shown enough over recent seasons to ensure nobody should treat a meeting with them as an automatic three points.<\/p>\n The weekend closes with another intriguing assignment as Juventus travel to Sassuolo. Juventus will naturally carry expectations, but Sassuolo have made a habit over the years of making life uncomfortable for Italy’s biggest clubs.<\/p>\n Elsewhere, Atalanta host Cagliari, while Lecce face Monza.<\/p>\n There is something about Serie A weekends like this. Maybe there isn’t one gigantic blockbuster, but there are traps everywhere.<\/p>\n One bad afternoon and suddenly the questions start.<\/p>\n Game to watch:<\/strong> Lazio vs Milan Now we come home.<\/p>\n Kaizer Chiefs travel to Polokwane City unbeaten in their opening five league matches, with three wins and two draws putting Amakhosi third heading into the weekend. Polokwane, meanwhile, are winless in their previous four league matches.<\/p>\n On the surface, that points towards Chiefs.<\/p>\n But South African football has taught us repeatedly that these away matches are where confidence can disappear very quickly.<\/p>\n If Chiefs genuinely want to be part of the conversation at the top of the table, this is the type of fixture they need to win. Not celebrate a draw. Not talk about positives afterwards.<\/p>\n Win.<\/p>\n Later on Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns visit Chippa United. Sundowns entered the weekend with a six-point advantage at the top after beating Siwelele 3-0 in midweek, so the champions are already applying pressure to everybody trying to chase them.<\/p>\n That is the frightening thing about Sundowns.<\/p>\n You can spend weeks talking about whether somebody is finally ready to challenge them, and meanwhile Sundowns just keep collecting points.<\/p>\n AmaZulu host Marumo Gallants in Saturday’s other fixture, before Sunday’s programme brings Milford against Richards Bay, Siwelele against Golden Arrows and TS Galaxy against Kruger United.<\/p>\n Game to watch:<\/strong> Polokwane City vs Kaizer Chiefs Four countries. Four very different football stories.<\/p>\n In England, Manchester will be divided.<\/p>\n In Spain, Madrid and Barcelona carry the familiar weight of expectation.<\/p>\n In Italy, Lazio and Milan could give us an early indication of who is ready for the bigger battles ahead.<\/p>\n And in South Africa, the question remains the same: can anybody consistently keep pace with Sundowns?<\/p>\n That’s what makes weekends like this special.<\/p>\n Somebody will make a statement. Somebody will drop points nobody expected them to drop.
