There are ordinary days in football And then there is Transfer Deadline Day. A day when perfectly sensible football clubs suddenly behave like somebody who has remembered at 10:47pm that they were supposed to buy a birthday present.<\/p>\n

Phones ring. Agents whisper. Private jets become objects of forensic investigation. Supporters convince themselves that a blurry photograph taken outside an airport is definitive proof that a \u00a370-million midfielder is about to sign for their club.<\/p>\n

And somewhere, inevitably, a fax machine is probably still being blamed for something.<\/p>\n

The summer transfer window slammed shut in England at 11pm on Tuesday night, bringing an end to another gloriously excessive summer of buying, selling, loaning and negotiating.And Deadline Day delivered exactly what Deadline Day promises.<\/p>\n

Chaos as Manchester City Drop \u00a3125 Million Because Apparently Midfielders Grow on Money Trees<\/p>\n

The headline act was Enzo Fern\u00e1ndez swapping Chelsea blue for Manchester City blue in a \u00a3125-million move.<\/p>\n

One hundred and twenty-five million pounds for one footballer.<\/p>\n

There was a time when \u00a3125 million could probably buy you an entire football club, the stadium, the training ground and the bloke selling pies outside.<\/p>\n

Now it gets you Enzo Fern\u00e1ndez. And City were not finished.<\/p>\n

They also took Iliman Ndiaye from Everton for \u00a365 million, because apparently Pep Guardiola looked at Manchester City’s squad and thought: “We’re a little light.”<\/p>\n

That is the extraordinary thing about modern football.<\/p>\n

The richest squads somehow always discover another position requiring immediate attention.<\/p>\n

Everton Get Their Grealish<\/strong><\/p>\n

Going the other direction was Jack Grealish, returning to Everton on loan from Manchester City.<\/p>\n

There is something wonderfully Deadline Day about that sentence. Grealish remains one of English football’s great entertainers \u2014 part footballer, part celebrity, part man who looks as though he’d happily join you for Sunday lunch despite having absolutely no idea who you are.<\/p>\n

Everton will hope they can give him the one thing every talented footballer eventually needs football.<\/p>\n

And if they can get Grealish enjoying himself again, Goodison’s successor could have one of the most watchable players in the league on its hands.<\/p>\n

Tottenham Shop at Chelsea<\/strong><\/p>\n

Across London, Tottenham decided the best way to improve their squad was apparently to have a look through Chelsea’s cupboards. Mykhailo Mudryk joined Spurs on loan, while defender Tosin Adarabioyo also made the move across the capital.<\/p>\n

Mudryk is particularly fascinating. Football has already seen glimpses of the frightening acceleration and raw talent that made Chelsea spend heavily on him in the first place. Now comes another opportunity. New club.New manager.New expectations.<\/p>\n

Deadline Day has always been football’s great provider of second chances. Sometimes they become masterstrokes.<\/p>\n

Sometimes everybody quietly pretends the transfer never happened six months later.That’s the beauty of it.<\/p>\n

Arsenal’s Revolving Door<\/strong><\/p>\n

Champions Arsenal had their own intriguing finale. Ethan Nwaneri headed to Borussia Dortmund on loan, a move that could prove enormously valuable for one of England’s brightest young talents. Dortmund and young footballers have traditionally gone together rather nicely.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile Gabriel Jesus joined Barcelona, while Fabio Vieira moved to Hamburg. Three departures.<\/p>\n

Three very different career paths.And one reminder that Deadline Day isn’t only about clubs buying shiny new toys. For players, it can change everything. One minute you’re wondering whether you’ll get meaningful minutes this season.<\/p>\n

The next you’re packing a suitcase for Barcelona.Football moves quickly.<\/p>\n

Deadline Day moves faster.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aston Villa Continue Their Reconstruction Few clubs embraced change quite like Aston Villa.<\/p>\n

Their Deadline Day brought Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain and Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton, adding another layer to what has been a substantial reconstruction of the squad.<\/p>\n

Newcastle weren’t exactly sitting quietly either, bringing in Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille. Fulham added Hugo Larsson from Eintracht Frankfurt, while Sunderland landed Malick Fofana from Lyon.<\/p>\n

Players moved.Millions moved. Agents presumably moved directly towards very expensive restaurants. And supporters refreshed their phones approximately 14,000 times.<\/p>\n

But Deadline Day Has Never Really Been About Transfers.That’s the secret.<\/p>\n

Deadline Day isn’t popular because football supporters desperately want to understand amortisation schedules and sell-on clauses. We love it because it compresses everything ridiculous about football into a few frantic hours.<\/p>\n

As for Juventus I think Gods stick was hitting me. I kept making Maskary of Woltemade and then Juve pull a Nocolas Bendtner and sign Woltamade from Newcastle. Eish Man, Why? From greats like Del Piero, Inzaghi, Baggio, Dybala, Tevez to this. No Man<\/p>\n

Hope.Rumour. Money.Ambition. Desperation.<\/p>\n

For supporters, every signing contains possibility.<\/p>\n

Because Transfer Deadline Day remains football’s most wonderful contradiction. Utterly ridiculous. Completely excessive.<\/p>\n
