Carlos Alcaraz Is Back \u2014 And New York Can Feel It<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some victories are measured in sets. Others are measured in the distance travelled simply to stand on the court again.<\/p>\n

For Carlos Alcaraz, Monday afternoon at Arthur Ashe Stadium belonged emphatically to the second category.<\/p>\n

After 139 days without playing a competitive singles match, the defending US Open champion walked back into the biggest tennis stadium in the world and defeated Roman Safiullin 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.<\/p>\n

But this was anything but an ordinary first-round victory. A wrist injury took away his clay-court season. It took away Roland Garros. It took away Wimbledon. And for months it placed a question mark beside one of the most electrifying careers in modern tennis. So when the 23-year-old emerged onto Ashe, there was inevitably rustiness and hunger<\/p>\n

There were nerves, too ofcourse. Alcaraz later admitted that he had almost forgotten what match day felt like. Yet beneath all that uncertainty, the essential Alcaraz remained unmistakable.<\/p>\n

The forehand began to crack. The drop shot returned. The extraordinary court coverage \u2014 that ability to turn a point that appears completely lost into one his opponent suddenly has to win all over again \u2014 was there. And gradually, the smile returned with it.This wasn’t vintage Alcaraz.<\/p>\n

The Scoreline Tells Only Half the Story Safiullin presented a legitimate examination. The Russian generated early opportunities against the Alcaraz serve and even broke at the beginning of the second set. Alcaraz immediately broke back.<\/p>\n

That response mattered. Because after four-and-a-half months away, this first round wasn’t really about whether Carlos could produce a spectacular forehand winner. We already knew he could do that.The questions were different.<\/p>\n

Could the wrist withstand Grand Slam tennis?<\/p>\n

Could the legs withstand long rallies?<\/p>\n

Could his competitive instincts survive four months without meaningful match play?<\/p>\n

And when an opponent applied pressure, would that familiar Alcaraz ferocity still appear?<\/p>\n

For one afternoon in New York, the answer to every question was yes.<\/p>\n

Safiullin managed only one break of serve. Alcaraz repeatedly played the important points better and eventually completed a remarkably controlled straight-sets return.<\/p>\n

Then Came the Most Important Words of the Day<\/p>\n

Forget the 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.<\/p>\n

Forget the winners.<\/p>\n

Forget even the place waiting beside Alcaraz’s name in the second round.<\/p>\n

The sentence that mattered came afterwards:<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the match, my body felt great.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

For Alcaraz, his team and everyone wondering whether the defending champion had arrived in New York merely hoping to compete or genuinely capable of defending his crown, those words changed the complexion of the tournament.<\/p>\n

Because surviving Round One was only part of the mission. Alcaraz needed his body to tell him he could do this again. It did.<\/p>\n

Arthur Ashe Still Belongs to Carlos.There is something particularly fitting about Alcaraz rediscovering competitive tennis here.<\/p>\n

New York was where the teenager became a Grand Slam champion for the first time. It was where the extraordinary talent became a superstar.<\/p>\n

Alcaraz spoke afterwards about how much he had missed the crowd, the energy and the competition during what he described as an extremely difficult five months. You could see it. This is a player who doesn’t merely play tennis. He seems to require it.<\/p>\n

The roar after match point wasn’t the celebration of somebody relieved to beat the world No. 99.<\/p>\n

It felt like the release of somebody who had spent 139 days waiting to feel this alive again.<\/p>\n

The Rest of the Draw Has Been Warned. There will be tougher afternoons.<\/p>\n

There will almost certainly be moments when four months of competitive inactivity reveal themselves more brutally than they did against Safiullin.<\/p>\n

Alcaraz’s first serve averaged around 112 mph, below his usual level, and he committed 27 errors and five double faults. So nobody should confuse Monday with peak Carlos.<\/p>\n

The seven-time Grand Slam champion also extended a remarkable record: Alcaraz is now 21-0 in first-round Grand Slam matches.<\/p>\n

Next comes Portugal’s Jaime Faria, a player Alcaraz has never faced and who recently reached a career-high ranking of No. 70.<\/p>\n

In reality, perhaps one of the most meaningful straight-sets victories Carlos Alcaraz will ever record.<\/p>\n
